See-through kettles

What are people's experiences of see-through kettles? Considering getting one but don't want it to look scummy after a few weeks!

I've had a Breville one for 14 years, it's lasted well and still going strong. We used to live in a soft water area and I didn't need to do anything to it, it was never scummy. Have lived in a hard water area for last 5 years and have to de-scale it every 3-6 months to keep it crystal clear, but that just involves shoving a descaling tablet in it- very quick job. It doesn't get too much limescale in that time and still looks fine unless you are right in front of it but I don't want it building up. It is plastic rather than glass, don't know if that makes a difference to the limescale build up.

Thanks! Anyone else?

I had one. I bought it on purpose to remind me to descale. I just used to boil a bit of white vinegar in it when needed. We're in London, so not sure how our water compares with yours.

I have a see through kettle. We also live in a hard water area.
I just go boil the kettle with distilled vinegar in once a week. It does an amazing job.

You've started this thread for me OP! I'm in the market for a clear kettle. I live in a hard water area though. Can you buy distilled vinegar in the supermarket?

I've seen a clear kettle in Robert Dyas but it lights up and I'm not sure if that will look tacky Hmm

Thanks. Also in hard water area.

We had one in a hard water area, I just descaled it regularly and was fine!

Hard water area (London). Gets very scaled up but also v satisfying to descale with vinegar as you see it all fizz away. I love a see through kettle.

Thanks all, this all seems very positive!

I use filtered water (Brita) and that helps a lot. But descaling with vinegar is also good!
