Sink problems, advice needed!

We live in a rented 3rd floor flat and the sink in the bathroom just broke at the pipe that goes into the wall. Well first the plug thing that you push or pull to plug the sink broke, I thought I should try and fix it but had to unscrew the U thing under the sink, then the pipe came out of the wall, and now it won't fit back in as if the drainage pipe inside the wall has been pushed back. Hope you are still with me...

Anyway, would you call a plumber or the caretaker in charge of our building? I don't mind paying a plumber because it's too risky for me to try and fix it, what if I do it wrong and the water slowly leaked into the wall or downstairs...? Any one live in rented place? What do you do? Call caretaker or try and fix it or call a professional?

I would call the caretaker first, as usually it falls to the landlord to repair things like plumbing at their expense. If you don't get a quick response, call again and say that you're going to get a plumber and deduct it from the rent, and if that doesn't get a response, go ahead and do just that. Or if you're uncomfortable deducting it from the rent, send the bill to the landlord (recorded delivery) and claim it back.

I thought when renting it was the lanlords responsibility to fix things like this.

Thanks girls, I asked a few of the mums at school who I know rent and that's what they said! Guess we've been lucky in all our years in rented housing that nothing has ever gone wrong so this is a first. I rang the caretaker and he said he'd ring back so hope he can fix it.
Kids were most put out at having to lean over the bath to brush teeth (definately not going to take them camping in the near future!)
