Would it be OK to still use this dishwasher?

I have a dishwasher that I stopped using about 5 years ago when the drainage hose (I'm assuming that's what it is - at the end of the cycle, the water came out of the dishwasher through it - it's a long, corregated type tube at the back of the dishwasher) split and flooded my kitchen. I meant to replace that part but never got around to it.

I emptied the dishwasher, but since then it's just been in my kitchen, still plumbed in with the dishwasher door closed for about 5 years!

I had a peek inside it recently and it looked OK other than the air inside smelling stale.

If I were to replace the hose thing and run a couple of hot washes with dishwasher cleaner, would that be enough to make sure it was safe and hygienic to use again? It does seem wasteful that I'm not using it, but I don't know whether an appliance that has sat so long with the door closed would start breeding anything nasty bacteria-wise?!

Thanks

You can get dishwasher cleaners that disinfect it.

Do you mean like this kind of thing - it doesn't mention disinfecting on the description. www.finish.co.uk/products/additives/dishwasher-cleaner/finish-dishwasher-cleaner-regular/

I’d replace the hose, empty out the filters, and run one of those cleaning products through it followed by ten runs on hottest setting with it empty over a few days to really gut it.

Should be fine after that for sure. You could probably get away with a couple of runs but I’d over-run it just to make sure all was well with it as I don’t like being unwell. I doubt any bugs could be lurking in it after that lot of cleaning?

I’d replace the hose, clean it all out including filters/arms and run it on the hottest cycle with a dishwasher cleaner.

Not many things can survive above 52c, I’d run a couple of hot cycles & use it.
