Cleaning polished porcelain tiles HELP!

Does anyone have these? I had them laid earlier this year and they're driving me insane. They look so greasy after cleaning, leaving footprints everywhere, literally looks like someone's smeared butter on the floor. For a short while I found the best way was glass cleaner & microfibre mop, then every so often a good scrub on my hands/knees with kitchen roll/glass cleaner.... but for some reason it's started doing this again. I had them sealed when laid & scrubbed them at that point to remove the initial residue they come with. I've tried 'polished porcelain' cleaning solution, was even worse than the glass cleaner. Have tried water, water/fabric conditioner, water/fairy. HELP!

You need a degreaser that leaves no residue. I used white vinegar and fairy on my tile floors with success. Just a splash vinegar and tiny squirt fairy in very very hot water. You want to make sure the mop is also well squeezed so it’s almost damp mopping.
(The vinegar is also as a strong a disinfectant as bleach but without the oily residue or toxicity. So safe for even a baby to play on.)

Thanks, forgot to say I've tried white vinegar & hot water but without Fairy, so I'll give that a go with super hot water & a normal mop!

Yes, you need a bit of both. IT won’t be very sudsy but will still clean. Then just let air dry. Don’t tower dry or anything. Good luck!

HouseOfCrayCray · 20/12/2019 16:10

Thanks for the advice, fingers crossed it works for me Grin

I’ve got polished porcelain in that colour & size, they only smear when I’m ill and dh is in charge.

I’ve got a cheap cotton mop, a bucket and a spray mop with 7 spare mop heads.

Wash them in very hot water & however much multi purpose cleaner it says on the bottle, I use Aldi because it’s not tested on animals. Give it a mop, let it dry then spray mop it, fill the bottle with the hot water before you start mopping.

Then you just need to hoover/sweep daily, quick spray mop and your done. I do a proper mop once a week.

Don’t use fabric softener on the mop heads, or any microfibre when you wash them, it reduces absorbency and smears your floors.

Fluffycloudland77 - Hey, thanks so much for this. I got down on my hands & knees with the vinegar & fairy & it did definitely help, however, they still have smears on the next day. Do yours smear if any tiny drop of water lands on them? Funnily enough it's the Aldi glass cleaner I was using originally with a spray mop & I too have about 50 mop heads because I was having to change them so often to stop streaking GrinI found they'd do this after a few uses. Which multi purpose cleaner do you use from Aldi? Will have to grab some & give it a go.

I had polished porcelain floors in a previous property and with three kids they drove me batshit to distraction.

I never ever felt totally satisfied but no fabric softener and microfibre cloths + fairy were the only things that prevented hideous smearing.

I spent a lot of time hand-buffing those bastard floors SadFlowers

Fluffycloudland77 · 23/12/2019 07:10

I use the lemon all purpose/multipurpose in the litre bottle. They don’t smear if I drop water on them.

They’re the easiest floor I’ve had maintenance wise. The robo hoover goes round daily and I spray mop daily which takes minutes. When we had them fitted we had our Bengal who could find mud in the 2018 heatwave and I needed something to stand up to his muddy pawpaws.

I think you’ve got a product build up, happened here when I was ill and dh used washing up liquid & glass cleaner on them. He got a bollocking for it and hasn’t done it since.

HouseOfCrayCray · 23/12/2019 12:15

Ughhhh I don't know how I'd have a build up though as I've scrubbed them every day, multiple times lol, plus when I go over them they look so clean...... until anyone steps so much as their toe on them. I do go over with the spray mop after anyone's been in the kitchen lol, makes no difference. Smears are back already after I cleaned them this morning. Maybe it's the magic Aldi multi purpose cleaner that helps, I better get there sharpish. Don't even have any pets, no shoes in the house etc Confused

ChocAuVin - I feel your pain grrr Angry

The washing up liquid, bet that’s it. It’s so concentrated that it’s very difficult to properly rinse.

I bet if you just wet mopped with no detergent you’d have suds in the bucket at the end.

Iusedtobeskinny · 23/12/2019 12:24

That doesn’t sound right, mine are fine with hot water and method floor cleaner, they shouldn’t be getting that much build up.

MaidenMotherCrone · 23/12/2019 12:27

Steam mop sorts them out with the minimum of effort.

This is £125 today, got mine in the summer.

HouseOfCrayCray · 23/12/2019 20:25

Oooh i'll have to try the steam mop, my bil has one so will borrow that for a day. Out of interest, what colour tiles do you all have, maybe some just show the marks more than others?

OP posts:
theneverendinglaundry · 23/12/2019 22:16

Oh OP I feel your pain, I have the same kind of tiles but in black. You only have to breathe near them and they look awful.

I have found that diluted zoflora is the only product that doesn't leave streaks. I use it with an eco cloth or eco mop (the kind that clean with only water).

MaidenMotherCrone · 23/12/2019 22:30

Mine are the same as yours btw.

HouseOfCrayCray · 24/12/2019 21:25

Thanks guys, all suggestions noted & will be tried & tested Grin Merry Christmas everyone Xmas Wink

LetsAskaRobot · 24/12/2019 21:47

Steam mop and method floor cleaner works perfectly for me, no marks or smears.

HouseOfCrayCray · 24/12/2019 22:40

Thanks LetsAskaRobot, that's another vote for a steam mop then, also seems the easiest.

Aloe6 · 24/12/2019 22:44

No suggestions just place marking as have the same problem. Merry Christmas! Xmas Grin

HouseOfCrayCray · 24/12/2019 23:18

So glad it isn't just me who's sick of them. I'll report back after all ideas have been tested Xmas Grin

ANYONE THINKING OF GETTING THESE, I HAVE ONE WORD OF ADVICE - DON'T Crown Grin

OP posts:
HouseOfCrayCray · 28/12/2019 21:27

For anyone still reading, steam mopping was not the one. The water from the steam just stayed there for ages as they aren't porous tiles, but i persevered & let them dry. After an hour or so I was left with weird wavey streaks all over :-|

Back to the vinegar & boiling water, which has been the best solution yet, until I try the next suggestion.

Seriously considering tearing these fuckers up.
