Does the essential oils on cotton wool thing really work?

I’m desperate for my house to smell lovely over Christmas. I’ve read that a few drops of essential oil on a cotton wool ball, plonked on top of the radiator, really works. Has anyone tried this and if so, how strong is the scent and does it really work? I’m sick of spending a fortune on scented candles so am looking for a cheaper and more effective option!

I have a Scentsy wax warmer and my living room is smelling lovely (I have a Christmas themed wax on at the moment). They're warmed by a light bulb so no flames and are pet safe- my cat has ignored mine so far but even if he didn't it's safe for him.

Of course they're artificial. Just because it says 'natural' or something on the bottle...

Of course they're artificial

How is an oil extracted from a plant artificial?

SpoonBlender · 12/12/2019 14:56

Mashing your plants and boiling in alcohol to extract oils doesn't really scream "natural" to me.

It is natural.
Just boiled flowers really...? Dont see what's artificial about that. Not that it matters anyway.

I hope you don't use any cooking oil then. You may get poisoned Confused

If something smells bad just clean it?

That's the thing - the house is really clean and hard floors throughout. As I said, the new curtains have a strange smell but I'm not sure what I can do about that!

It sounds like essential oils are out of the question due to my cat and fabric conditioner isn't great either (according to the pp's link). Perhaps I'll go down the boiling cinnamon and orange peel route that someone else suggested! And maybe chuck some cloves in there too?

Hija, sorry I was busy.. yes some essential oils affect cats and can cause them problems so just a wee heads up to be careful which ones you use 🌲

It's not "artificial" though, that means "synthetic/fake"
