Thinking of advertising to do people ironing, how much shall I charge??

I live in a medium sized village and lots of people here commute to London, so was thinking about getting some cash doing ironing!
I have a little boy at home so thought I could fit it in around him.
Not sure how to charge, was thinking per item, or even per box? Does anyone else have any ideas...and how much is reasonable?

Thanks

I like the box idea, stick big advert on the side with phone number, PHONE ME WHEN FULL type thing, it will be seen by there friends so aditional advertising. Will make collecting easier as you can stack them all in the back seat, rather than worrying about bags bursting.

How does it work for hanging things though, if you iron shirts will you provide hangers and how will you transport them without crushing them.

Does anyone here do ironing - but not drive??

It's something I've considered doing - but I don't drive - so can't really collect or deliver stuff

Our ironing lady charges per item but will collect in the evening and return the next evening all on hangers. I think prices are £1.50 for shirts, 75p for most other things, duvet covers/bedding a bit more. Wouldn't be without her. Also pay cash in hand so I don't imagine she is registered or anything. We are in East Midlands.

ooooh DH would love us to pay someone to iron, but i wont let him!!!

wolveschick · 24/08/2007 13:22

Local bloke comes and collects for free and brings back usually within 24 hours. 50p per item, including bed linen. If you just send bed linen #1.00 per item. Under 6 years, 25p per item. I think this is too cheap but dont tell him . West Midlands area.

dizzydo, sorry for slow response, that's in Furzedown, just south of Tooting Common.

Wheelybug · 24/08/2007 17:57

I know dizzydo - I need to get off my ar$e and find someone else. The thing is I am planning on getting a cleaner who will also do the ironing and we are about to have major work done on house so no point till after then. At least if I pay over the odds to get dh's shirts done then it won't come as such a shock to dh when we are paying for a cleaner

Tutter · 24/08/2007 18:00

my cleaner takes it away with her

i pay her £10 an hour, the same as cleaning

Skribble- with regard to the shirts I will tell people to provide them on hangers. Then I can iron and then rehang and not have to use my own hangers, I will probably then use a white bin bag upside down and put it over the block of hangers.

I am gonna buy a box this weekend, fill it with some clothes and weigh it, and then make sure that I would be happy to do it for £20!! As long as it doesnt take me more that 2 hours it means I get £10 per hour!

So I am thinking £20 per box (to weigh under ) 85p per shirt, I will also collect and drop off (in village) when requested (within reason!!).

Shirts on hangers, clothes folded in box.

Does that sound good??

If you are in the village thats not so bad for traveling but do consider things like petrol, cost of boxes, replacement irons and boards etc. But if your estimates work out right thats not bad wage wise. Try a few combinations in the box and see what your average time is.
