Anyone starting the Marie Kondo tidying method?

I have just come across this book changing methos of tidying and so much of it really resonates with me. My house is filled with clutter and stuff everywhere, I can never find things and my daughters have so much junk that they can never keep their rooms tidy. So much of our stuff doesn't have a place where it belongs.

So... I have decided to go for the Konmari method and I am looking for support/encouragement for anyone else who is doing the same - or indeed those who have done it and recommend it.

Last night I had an initial look through my socks and underwear drawer, and threw out a load of stuff. I didn't do it 'properly' with all my clothes taken out, but I did empty out and refold that one drawer and it already looks so much better.

I need to clear some space in the garage so I have somewhere to put the stuff to recycle, then I will try to work through steadily.

I did my whole house at the beginning of the year, and I also made a list of things that annoyed me or frustrated me about the house e.g. loose handle on the wardrobe, or all the tupperware falling out of the cupboard.

I decluttered, got better storage in place and fixed all the things that annoyed me everyday and I now feel so much calmer in my house. It really helps you think about what you buy and bring into your house afterwards as well and stop buying so much stuff.

I started Konmari 2 years ago and the bits I did worked well, particularly clothes. My knicker drawer is still a thing of beauty and makes me smile every day (I should get out more) and I have a small wardrobe of clothes I love and wear.

Where I found it harder was where it wasn't only my decision (books, kitchenware, tat around the house) and not being able to stop my life for 6 weeks to do it all. I think she developed her method when she was a young, single woman living at home and had no life admin to do!

So I try to apply her ideas, but more slowly. Come and join us on the Decluttering One Thing A Day thread if you like - it's very friendly and supportive!

Yes, started it last year and don’t know why I didn’t do it earlier. You can actually see what’s in your draw!

Thank you for the responses. I'm glad that you have all found it helpful. I'm at that early stage of throwing myself into it at the moment, but I do wonder how long I will be able to keep working at it. And I agree with GreenWillow that I'm not sure how it will work with household items and trying to organise my husband's and my daughters' things.
