Drying laundry in a flat

DomesticSloath · 24/11/2019 19:07

DS has moved into a flat.
It has a small utility cupboard with a combination washer/dryer.
The dryer is not very effective so he's been hanging washing on a clothes airer.
There's no outside space, the flat isn't particularly warm and it all feels a bit damp.
Is there a solution? He can't afford a launderette regularly.

You can purchase electric clothes hangers that warm up and dry the clothes

Electric clothes airer ? Apparently very cheap to use

Tryingtogetitright · 24/11/2019 19:10

We have an ebac dehumidifier. It's brilliant - will help dry the washing and any damp.

missmouse101 · 24/11/2019 19:11

A dehumidifier is an absolute must.

Thistly · 24/11/2019 19:12

In his situation I would be making sure I was producing As little washing as possible eg: wear pyjamas then don't change the sheets so often.
Also i would invest in a small dehumidifier to put next to the airer.

I have not had great success with heated airers, and imagine they wouldn't reduce the damp.

Well thank you so much.
Lakeland have several options, that's his Christmas present sorted.

Heated airer from Lakeland.

theneverendinglaundry · 24/11/2019 19:18

I have the Lakeland heated airer with a cover. Its fab.

Also, do an extra spin on the washing machine to remove more water.

Heating on and window open when drying, worked perfectly for me for 14 years.

MotherOfSoupDragons · 24/11/2019 19:21

Dehumidifier in the utility room works a dream for us.

Carrotv · 27/11/2019 22:46

Heated airer, heated airer cover, dehumidifier.

Could he get a small ceiling clothes aired? I live in a flat in Scotland where they are very common. No need for tumble driers or wet clothes being draped over furniture.

FlindersKeepers · 28/11/2019 17:05

I live in Germany in a city centre flat, this is totally normal here. He should get a clothes drying rack, doesn't need to be heated, but if you like, why not.
The key thing is to air the flat.
Leaving a window tipped open is good for energy companies and burglars. A wide open window twice or three times a day for about 5 minutes will help. You need to air more for a modern building than an old one.

Something like this will help
www.amazon.co.uk/EcoAir-DD1-CLASSIC-MK5-Dehumidifier/dp/B008BZVCVM/ref=asc_df_B008BZVCVM/?hvlocphy=9045845&linkCode=df0&hvptwo&psc=1&hvnetw=g&hvadid=214470891806&hvpone&hvlocint&hvpos=1o5&hvdev=t&hvdvcmdl&hvqmt&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&hvtargid=pla-385651182622&hvrand=4946693670551251321

I’m sure they are different models also available at other shops.

Always air the flat especially when showering, cooking.

Has he got a decent fan in the bathroom?
