Moved into rented property - no cleaning done :(

As title says, I've moved into a rented property, but it clearly hasn't been cleaned.

The bathroom is gross, limescale all under the waterline of the toilet bowl and dust stuck to the extractor fan. Also the shower screen is covered in soap scum and black mould all over the bath/shower seals.

Secondly a horrible stain on the countertops downstairs.

And thirdly, it looks like the extractor fan and oven have NEVER been cleaned.

Apparently the landlord is refusing to do a professional clean, so it looks like its up to me now.

Any tips on how to resolve these issues? I've always kept my house very clean (cleaned my over once a week, blast mould and mildew out of my bathroom once a week as well, keep my extractor fan clean also) so with this very deep clean, I don't even know where to begin! :(

The black mould! Gets some domestos toilet bleach (it's like the thick gel) and pour it on, put tissue rolled up against it to sandwich the bleach on it and leave it for 12 hours honest to god it just wipes away. You would never know it had been there.

Ds had a singing bath toy stuck on the tiles and I never thought to remove it to clean behind it. (I did clean my bathroom just to add lol!)

When I finally chucked it I had mould all behind it and could not get it off. I watched this video and tried it and it cleared the lot.

As for the oven. I used bicarbonate of soda £1 from wilko, mixed it with water into a paste and lathered it all inside my oven including all over the glass door (I don't often use the oven much and definitely don't clean it enough) it was super gross!

The inside and all the glass I left that paste on for 2 hours and used a scourer and it just cleaned straight off.

Looked brand new.

For the shower screen, you want white vinegar and a magic eraser. (I got them from home bargains / poundstretcher type places) It will make your shower screen see through.

All limescales comes off the taps / plugs with the vinegar if you use the magic eraser aswell.

(Warning! Do not use vinegar around bleach though if you do decide to do that domestos thing.)

Wait a day or so and make sure all the bleach residue has gone. Or visa Versa.

I went a bit mrs Hinch not long ago and my house looked brand new Grin

Make sure before you do anything that you photograph all the dirt and mould and grime and datestamp the pics. Landlord sounds shit and just the sort to kick up a fuss when you leave and anything is less than pristine. I take it you’re not in a position to find something else in a hurry?

MsPepperPotts · 22/11/2019 12:09

There's nothing worse than having to clean up someone else's muck and it can be overwhelming knowing where to start.
So you have my sympathy there OP
Agree with pps
Bicarbonate of Soda or soda crystals is great for all cleaning plastic, glass and ovens, just leave on for a few hours.
Mould and mildew cleaner is great if you leave in place for a few hours and then just rinse away. Plenty of ventilation when spraying a lot of it.

You will soon have your new place looking great Halloween Grin

I agree, take photographs and make sure he doesn't expect you to pay for professional cleaning when you move out.

I have found that white vinegar is the best for removing limescale. Using it with a magic eraser sounds like a great idea.

An old toothbrush might come in handy for cleaning hard to reach places, or grout.

As a landlord and a tenant I wouldn't tolerate this.
Firstly take detailed pictures of everything. Ideally a little video as well.
Then contact letting agents or landlord and explain if this isn't professionally cleaned that you will be getting a professional clean done and you will be deducting this from the rent.

Highlight that black mold is a health risk and environmental services could be contacted if necessary.

Don't just give in to this, this is hours of your valuable time you are giving up.

AgeShallNotWitherHer · 23/11/2019 22:17

Was this detailed on your check-in report?
(It should have been) Would it be worth getting the LL to pay fro a professional clean?

mumwon · 23/11/2019 22:36

send attached by email to agent as well & press button "for when delivered" don't do" when message opened" because they can cancel that (dd told me that you do that - apparently she does this!)

Dazedandconfused10 · 23/11/2019 22:40

Did you request a professional clean before you moved in? If not, unfortunately they don't have to provide it in that condition. You just have no obligation to leave it clean when you leave. I assume there was an inventory done?

dreichwinter · 23/11/2019 23:43

You should check your contract very carefully, does it talk about leaving the house in a certain condition? Or having a professional clean?
If they aren't prepared to clean it then record in writing the poor condition you have got it in and will be returning it in.

simonisnotme · 25/11/2019 21:49

pink stuff from home bargains is good, cheap and effective

Lunafortheloveogod · 25/11/2019 22:00

Find a different landlord if he won’t fork out for a cleaner once in a blue moon he won’t fork out for repairs. Mould can be a sign of damp/poor ventilation which could’ve been the tenant before not opening windows or something worse.

Take pictures of everything and check all appliances work asap.
