How to make homemade air freshener

Does anyone have any tips on how to do this and what to include? I'd really like some for my house and they're so expensive to keep buying.

I thought essential oils would be good to use, but am worried they'll leave a sticky residue (and that they're flammable!)

I've tried all sorts and now I just put a pot of water simmering on the stove and put things in it....cloves, cinnamon, citrus peels...you can put all sorts in there.

Leave it on for a while. The smell is lovely.

don't however let it burn down. The smell is then NOT lovely and it knackers your pans

Thanks! I’m hoping to make one for the bathroom though. Does anyone have any ideas?

A few drops of essential oil in a spray bottle full of water. I haven't found a sticky residue. You can also spray it on the fabric items in your bathroom so the smell will last longer.

This. Also, if you add a teaspoon or two of vodka, it helps disperse the fragrance oil in the water. Something to do with it being an emulsifier, so the oil and the water mix together. I am so clearly not a chemist

Be incredibly careful if you're spraying essential oil anywhere. I knocked over an essential oil diffuser and it immediately (literally within seconds) stripped all the varnish off the table.

air 'freshener' is just another smell. Open the windows, that will smell much nicer than perfume!

I bought some Fig and Cassis essential oil. I put a few drops on cotton wool and leave them on a couple of radiators and that works when the radiator heats up.

I have also done cinnamon in a pan on the stove. That does work but you have to keep an eye on it. I find the radiator and essential oil does the trick. However, I also air the house as much as possible.

This is the sort of thing I’m worried about! Is it 100% safe to leave cotton wool balls with essential oil drops on radiators?

I do open the windows every day, but house still smells of stale coffee and generally just not great Sad

You are always better off diluting it, even to put it on cotton wool balls.

I have about 10 drops of oil for a 500ml spray bottle and it is strong enough to smell but doesn't leave any residue or damage anything I spray it on.

Essential oil is used for aromatherapy and massage as well as diffusers. I'd say they're far safer than chemical air fresheners in cans. I found this, which looks useful:
