Bedroom laundry sorting system/basket for family of 5

Hi,
I currently use 3 Ikea laundry baskets. The plasticy folding ones on a frame to sort whites/hand wash, colours and darks. This takes up a lot of space in our bedroom. I want a chair to read in in our room so need to conserve space and the laundry system needs to be streamlined. It can’t go in any other room. I have 3 sons who pay sports. I have a lot of washing. What laundry systems do people in a family of 5 use please?! Sorry - so rock n roll!

Each person (family of 4) has a washing basket in the bottom of their own wardrobe to take all washing. Dirty sports kit (darks) goes straight into washing machine and someone collects all the darks from all the baskets to make up a dark load. This is done most nights as we have 2 DS who both have rugby training/games 3 or 4 days a week and I cycle 3 times a week. Whites are done once a week as we don't have that much. Towels and bedding go straight into machine when they need doing.

We have a big basket in our room and a small one on our tiny landing. All colours go in together. Once during the week I usually have to move an armful of stuff from the little one to the big one. At the weekend we sort the contents of both bins into piles on the tiny landing and do 3-4 washes back to back. Mucky or damp sports kit never makes it upstairs. It goes straight into the utility and gets washed ad hoc, but then we don't have a lot of it. Towels and bedding tend not to make it to the basket - they just go straight from bathroom/bed when the wash goes on.

I find washing breeds. If you do a wash a day, you end up somehow needing to do 7 washes a week. Save it all up for a laundry day and there seems to be only half as much. It's weird.

We have an Ikea kallax unit with boxes for darks, lights and whites. Each other can contain roughly one load of washing.

The Kallax has a lot of potential! I agree Mistress I wash twice a week (unless there’s a kit shortage emergency) so need big ish baskets. Towels and sheets never get to the baskets and sports stuff usually sits in the washer until there’s a full load. Hiding it away is my concern as with an all boy household I’m trying to reclaim some space (and sanity!) in my bedroom. I’ve sorted into baskets (and the entire household are trained as such) for years and it saves so much time. It’s just space for multiple baskets. I debated one in each bedroom but again would have to sort and I know clean clothes would just get chucked in there to save them having to put them away!!!
