Are mice really that dangerous?

I posted in AIBU about some mattresses that had mouse droppings on:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3739304-To-throw-away-these-mattresses?pg=1&order=

The mattresses have been thrown and I will be throwing away the Moses baskets (apart from the stands which I assume I can antibac/bleach?)

But I’ve had comments saying that they spread horrendous diseases, I’m going to need some professional cleaning etc.

I know they carry diseases and have (hopefully!) gotten rid of the mice. I’m in the process of blocking all the holes so stop any coming back but am I going to have to burn the house down? I googled about the diseases they carry but it links to mainly American websites and pest control sites.

I have an 8 month old and I’m 11 weeks pregnant so now I’m really worried...

Mice piddle continually everywhere they go, so clean everything to within an inch of its life, and if it can't be cleaned, get rid and replace.

The horrible disease you are thinking of is probably Weil's disease, which can be spread by rodents but is relatively rare in the UK.

We did find mice droppings downstairs but I just thought they were chilling down there for some stupid reason.

I’m genuinely worried now about all the diseases! Do I really have to get a professional clean?

DD is only 8 months so I’m scared about what she’s been exposed to 😔

Everything in the cupboard will be chucked. I guess that means our Christmas decorations have to go 😔 I haven’t been far enough into the cupboard to check them yet

I have spates of mice coming in the house and have never fallen ill. Personally I wouldn't chuck your Christmas decorations.

Rats spread diseases but mice less so. You just need to give it a thorough clean, anything solid can be surface cleaned, fabrics washed in bio powder or napisan. Christmas decs etc will be fine.

Thanks all.

The AIBU post scared me shitless

Firstly I think your partner should clean the areas where the mice have definitely been given you are pregnant. We had a squirrel in our house who shat everywhere when I was pregnant and DH would let me touch anything. (They ca Carey toxoplasmosis)

Me have field mice intermittently, old house and can’t block up all the gaps but have traps down where they tend to come in. I just give everything a good wash. Only had them in a bedroom once and just cleaned. No evidence they had been on bed so just changed the sheets.

I'd be worried about chewing wires/peeing on electric things above all else. When I was in foster care we had a mouse for ages without knowing (we knew it was a while as it built an elaborate and very cute nest). They don't bother me like some people, but they're not something you want in your home.
