On the market for a new dishwasher - any recommendations?

As usual I don't know where to start with buying a household appliance! Our last dishwasher was an AEG which I liked bevause it had a heavy door and was very quiet. It lasted nearly 8 years which I don't think is too bad?

Any thoughts on what to look out for with a dishwasher?

My Bosch dishwasher is over 15 years old and still going strong. When it was new it was low to mid price range I don't know if it's just luck.

We've got a newish Bosch and its fine apart from that it has a cutlery tray instead of a rack which is a total pain. There's less height in the lower racks, it takes longer to load and the cutlery doesn't get properly clean.

I've got a twelve year old Beko. It was the absolute cheapest I could find and never let me down. I believe in buying the cheapest white goods possible

I generally stick to bosch but would consider other German brands of similar reputation like AEG. We had a little Bosch that lasted for 19 years. Replaced it like for like but the replacement had a massive failure aged about 6 years - tbf it might have survived at that point but there was a 10 day wait for a repair engineer with a £90 minimum charge to fix it or a next-day delivery on a new one including disposal of the old and I was right in the middle of some major stress so chose to throw money at the problem to make it go away quicker.

We have a cutlery tray and a height adjustable middle shelf in our latest dishwasher. I wouldn't get another one without both features, as it really helps maximise how much you can pile in. We went for a cheaper Beko rather than a Bosch as we blew the budget on other appliances, looking at reviews i got the sense some of their machines were good others less so - so you want to look at reviews on places like ao. Ours certainly cleans fine, we've only had it 1.5 years so I can't say anything about its longevity yet.

We have a John Lewis own brand one which I think is made by aeg. It's fine. Cleans dishes and hasn't broken

We have a Bosch (serie 6?) with a cutlery tray and I'm a total convert. It's a tiny but more faff at the beginning to stack it but I think we get more in that way and they clean better than with a cutlery pot.

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 02/11/2019 07:24

Oh I definitely won't be getting one with a cutlery tray. I took it out of my last dishwasher - such an enormous faff. I'm a bit wary of Bosch since my bad experience with my least favourite ever washing machine!

I keep meaning to try and get a cutlery basket to replace our tray, I don't find we do get noticeably more in the lower rack and if we have the middle one down we can't get our 12" plates in the bottom rack, if we have it up we can't get pint glasses in the middle one. We end up with about half a dozen bits of cutlery not clean per wash with the tray.

Miele. The salt goes in the door & I like the cutlery rack. They still do baskets.

acatcalledjohn · 02/11/2019 19:40

Our Bosch broke earlier this year. We replaced it with an AEG but after about two weeks we returned the AEG because the water inlet leaked, not to mention we hated the flimsy feel of the inside. Back to Bosch and very happy.

Beko/AEG/Zanussi all have the same interior so after our AEG experience they are not an option for us.

I bought a Bosch 3 years ago (basic model) to replace my 12 year old fantastic Bosch that finally stopped working. It’s terrible. It doesn’t clean at all well, despite me cleaning out the filters, changing detergent etc, and leaves deposits over all the dishes. I regularly end up washing the dishes by hand after washing in the machine. It has now stopped draining properly on one of the programmes. I will never buy a Bosch again.

DramaAlpaca · 02/11/2019 19:53

I had a Bosch that lasted 18 years through three house moves. Replaced it with another Bosch, but the build quality isn't quite as good. It's been going strong for six years though, so not doing too badly. I like the cutlery tray & adjustable rack.

Thank you for everyone's comments!

You know what? I'm going to give a cheap one a try. If it only lasts a couple of years then it's not been a costly experiment. If it lasts 5 years then it will have outperformed all the mid price dishwashers I've opted for before over the last 25 years or so.

Sorry to jump on your thread OP, we’re looking for an integrated dishwasher for our new kitchen. Never had one before.
We’ve been looking at Bosch but then came across this one www.johnlewis.com/whirlpool-supremeclean-wio3o33del-integrated-dishwasher-59-8cm-width-stainless-steel/p4769294

Are Whirlpool any good?
Thanks
