HELP Ruined the laundry with vegetable oil!!!!

Yesterday the vegetable oil got knocked onto the floor, spilling shit loads which mopped up a load of tea towels.

Threw said tea towels in the wash with other washing plus a squirt of Fairy thinking that would cure all my worries. I washed at 40 degrees with biological washing powder.

OMFG

Everything is ruined.

Everything, literally everything from the washing machine, is covered in black/grey/purple splodges. WTF do I do?????!

Picture is of my "white" Molke bra 😳

The bra I would soak with non-chlorine bleach (Vanish, Oxy-white, Miltons etc).

Beautiful3 · 29/10/2019 11:50

@Veterinari not at all. We all learn lessons at different points in our lives. Nothing to be embarrassed about.

Lochroy · 29/10/2019 11:55

Get a biological liquid or pod detergent like Ariel rather than powder. Powder has bleach but not so good on oil. Liquids or pods are much better on food stains. Once you've cleaned your machine, just wash and rewash at 40. Unless your fabrics can take the higher temps.

Veterinari · 29/10/2019 13:32

@Beautiful3

I don’t think anyone needs to be embarrassed except perhaps the smug posters saying unhelpful things like ‘I wouldn’t have washed oily things with regular laundry’

wibdib · 29/10/2019 14:01

The bra is silver enough to be a proper deliberate colour. I hate white bras - they always never end up properly white after a few washes whereas with bras that are silver/red/flesh/black/green with purple stripes/etc they always stay a nice colour!

See if there’s anything that you could dye to make it a more consistent colour out of the stuff that can’t be saved - won’t be the same but would be wearable!

Beautiful3 · 29/10/2019 14:15

I worked with adults with learning disabilities and they needed to be told the most basic things, as it never occurred to them most of the time. I have no idea about ops background, so find that sometimes the most basic things need to be explained for the good if the situation. I do not feel embarrassed, but thank you for thinking of me.

CatRash · 29/10/2019 14:34

Thank you to everyone for advice etc. Especially @Veterinari - you're right - hindsight is a wonderful thing indeed!

Anyway, I've rewashed all colours and bar a couple of things they look absolutely fine. Although I'll only know for sure once they're dry...

The whites were soaked overnight in colour run remover, oxi stain remover and Fairy. After a 60 degree wash this morning things are looking a lot better - by no means white but a considerable improvement. I left them washing again before I went to work.

The bra looks the worst - think it's the type of material that just sucks up stains. I will get some Dylon. I think everything else...touch wood... will be ok 🤞

Whoever said "your clothes can't be saved" don't worry we all learn lessons at different points in our lives. Nothing to be embarrassed about. 😂

Ps. I don't have learning difficulties 🤨

soak with vanish then cold wash then ordinary wash. also hot wash empty machine first. Luck!

MikeUniformMike · 29/10/2019 14:51

Dylon won't work on synthetics. Well done though OP.

CatRash · 29/10/2019 15:48

Thank you @MikeUniformMike. The bra is 95% cotton jersey and 5% elastane so I'm hoping it works to some degree. The Dylon packet says that it might be lighter on synthetic blends so we'll see 🤞 I went for navy blue dye so even a lighter version should work.

TBH it can't get much worse 😂

MikeUniformMike · 29/10/2019 16:03

Dye it. 95% cotton should be OK. The thread might be polyester though and that won't dye. The pack will probably dye more than just the bra so you could dye something else at the same time. Weigh the items dry and follow the instructions.

I think that you could confidently infer from her OP that she’s realised it wasn’t a great idea, and she wasn’t planning in doing it again. But thanks so much for sharing your patronising wisdom with us all Confused

Well done OP - glad you fixed it Smile

Veterinari · 29/10/2019 16:34

@CatRash
The same poster that inferred the OP might have learning difficulties Hmm
