How to keep carpets clean and fresh?

We recently moved into a house with carpets upstairs after living carpet free for nearly 8 years. I have a Henry and a dyson cordless. I

Downstairs is relatively easy to clean as it’s all laminate. I just use a broom to quickly clean every day. For upstairs carpets, I use the dyson 1-2 times a week, but that’s not cutting it. How often do you vacuum carpets? I vaguely remember sprinkling some powder before vacuuming in my old old house. Do people still use them? Are they any use? (No smell issues with my carpets)

Yes I often use the Shake and Vac in Lemon but I don’t think it cleans, more that it makes the carpet smell nice. The only real solution is to get the carpets cleaned professionally I’ve found.

They were professionally cleaned just before we moved in. Cream coloured carpets in a house with kids (and a child-man)!! We leave shoes by the door, door mats everywhere for wiping feet but still !

I found the cordless dyson to be rubbish and the Henry is much better at picking up dirt/dust/fluff. The 1001 carpet mousse is meant to be good for stains. I use the fragranced one as my carpets are very old and smell musty and I think it brightens it too although that may be purely psychological.
