Smelly washing

How can I stop my washing on the clothes horse from smelling? I didn’t have this problem in the summer but now it’s getting colder, my washing is taking longer to dry and is starting to smell. I do have a tumble dryer, which I use a lot but some things can’t be tumbled.

I have the same airer, no problem with it, but clothes can take up to 2 days to dry at the moment, so I've just bought another one so there is plenty of space for clothes to hang, also you need to move it near a radiator, mine come on 2hrs a day at the moment, also bought a brilliant dehumidifier a couple of years ago and that really sped up the drying process when I had to leave washing in a colder conservatory in winter.

I had this problem. I solved it by running a dehumidifier near it.

Bernadette of course things can shrink in a tumble dryer! That's why there are "do not tumble dry" labels on some clothes.

I will never tumble jeans, polo shirts and woollens, I've had too many shrinking disasters in the past.

I get around this by not buying those items to start with.

How long do you leave them drying for ? They will go smelly if left damp for more than 12 hours or so .

I get an enormous backlog of washing at this time of year - washing summer clothes to put away, washing jumpers and cardis that have come out of storage, not much in the way of sun or warmth in the garden, and the heating not on very often inside.

Nightmare Sad.

This is supposed to be great

I have the same problem . I put mine out in the middle of the room through the night. I agree it’s drying too slow

I put the heating on in stints (just an hour twice a day at the moment) windows open and a fan on for a few hours each day to get airflow, use detergent that has a scent and conditioner that has a sent. I also do an extra spin if I know I've got lots of washing to do, so that it's drier to start with. I find smaller loads spaced out dry quicker, so I can do 2 small loads, one in the morning and one before bed, and they both get dry, whereas with a larger load it would still be damp. I also turn items if I remember, so that they don't end up with one damp patch. I don't have a proper dehumidifier but they are brilliant. I do have the little ones though, which aren't as effective, but do fill up more quickly near where I dry washing so they are obviously doing something. I don't have a tumble drier, but I know tumbling as much as possible would take out a lot of the work/drama. If after items are out for more than 24 hours I would probably re wash it or air it at least because things can start to smell funky and I'd hate to have gone nose blind and missed the whiff. I also use those plug ins and a bit of febreeze to keep the house smelling fresh which I think helps. I do find other airer styles are better for indoor drying though.

I’m on my second Lakeland heated aired ( the first one I had for years and years died , but I well had my monies worth out of it ).i also have the cover . I find my washing dries fairly quickly, though I hang shirts and bedding on the high curtain poles and my long radiators . Couldn’t live without my heated airer though. Seems expensive as an initial outlay but I believe the cost of running to be fairly economical.
