Got a lovely new WD and I need to do a drum clean first, it recommends using limescale powder however I wondered whether vinegar would suffice instead? However I've only got distilled malt vinegar, not white vinegar, will that make a difference? If not, where can I get white vinegar from please?

Thanks in advance! Smile

You can get white vinegar from a supermarket or Wilko. Sorry, I know nothing about limesscale powder and whether you can use vinegar instead. Never heard of or had to do a drum clean first though!

I've tried the main supermarkets and no joy! I'm just going to stick some distilled malt vinegar in the draw and have a whirl and see what happens I think! Grin

White vinegar is right next to malt vinegar in the supermarket.
It will just say distilled on the bottle and be clear in colour.

I use distilled malt regularly to descale kettle and dushwasher. Works exactly the same just pongs a bit more!

Isn't it supposed to damaged the seals? I'd be nervous about vinegar..

Please don’t use vinegar it’s a waste of money. Just put it through a hot wash with a little bit of detergent in. It’s just to get rid of any manufacturing debris. Once a month put a cheap descaled through it.

timeforachange123 · 12/10/2019 05:32

user1498572889 I've used vinegar for over 40 years, in that time I've had 3 washing machines which have been used for up to 6 people in a household. I've had my most recent one for ten years. I put some vinegar in a hot wash every couple of months, nothing else. It costs pennies, my clothes are clean with no marks and the machines last for many years. Win win as far as I can tell

OliviaBenson · 12/10/2019 07:02

You need to go to the cleaning sections in the supermarket for white cleaning vinegar. I use it in my machine all the time.

wowfudge · 12/10/2019 09:31

Vinegar is vinegar at the end of the day. It's all ascetic acid. What type you use won't make a jot of difference to the washing machine. It won't damage anything.

user1498572889 · 13/10/2019 18:04

@timeforachange123
It’s the hot wash that makes the difference not the vinegar.

wowfudge · 14/10/2019 13:34

I disagree user. If you don't regularly use hot washes and tend to use liquid rather than powder then vinegar, which is a degreaser, will help clean your machine.

wowfudge · 14/10/2019 13:35

Oh and vinegar is a descaler and cheaper than washing machine cleaners.

user1498572889 · 14/10/2019 19:17

I’ve worked for a major washing machine manufacturer for 22 years. We spend thousands of hours testing machines. It’s the hot was that makes a difference. Use vinegar if you wish but it doesn’t make your machine clean.

Thanks for the replies!

I did both, a small squirt of malt vinegar (found some white vinegar the day after which is typical Grin ) then I ran it on a 3 hour 90 degree wash. Did my first load with an Ariel pod the day after and it all came out smelling wonderful and so clean!

Thanks for the help!

I only use 60 degrees when washing as well.
