Decluttering one thing a day - Part 9

SandAndSea · 08/10/2019 00:11

Welcome to our 9th thread in the Decluttering One Thing A Day series!

As you might imagine, we aim to get rid of one thing a day (or the equivalent, if we miss a few days).

The idea is that aiming low in this way prevents us from getting overwhelmed. It's also sustainable so helps us to develop effective clutter clearing habits which last.

In reality, many of us have found that once we start, we often get rid of far more than just one thing. (But if we don't, that's OK too.)

Everyone's welcome! We're a friendly and supportive bunch, from aspiring minimalists to full-on clutterbucks! We're also pretty green so you'll find lots of recycling, freecycling, donating and selling.

I've decluttered a bag of baby clothes. I've given them to my friend who is expecting. I'm finding the declutter if process much more therapeutic when I can come on here and tell you about what I have achieved.

PenelopeFlintstone · 12/10/2019 01:40

With plastic bags being banned everywhere, I wonder if we’ll go back to tying up our bundles with string?

SandAndSea · 12/10/2019 13:13

Welcome, @RoxytheRexy!

I'm still at my mum's but getting close to being able to leave.

I've done lots of cleaning and booked a regular cleaner to keep things looking nice. (The carpet looks so much better after stain treating - I'm quite pleased with myself.)

I've stocked up her food cupboards, cleaned out one and binned quite a bit of ood food: icing sugar, cheese, etc.

More outs: a DVD, a blender, a biscuit cutter, 2 vacuum cleaner attachments, another smashed pot.

I've discovered another stash of knitting stuff so I'm hoping to prune some of that, or at least find a good place for it.

She's really messy and has already started putting things in random places, but at least there's not so much now.

The knitting is now away and a handful of needles are going out. As am I! The coffee is calling.

I've just moved house and downsized so had a massive clearout and took half of everything I own to charity shops and the rest to the dump.
I feel really free now. The things I have are the things I love and I'm concentrating on painting and decorating and maing the place look amazing.

StealthNinjaMum · 12/10/2019 15:00

Thanks greenwillow it's good to be back.

Busy with dc today so I am just going to get rid of two thank you cards that have been on the dining room window sill for ages.

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 12/10/2019 18:39

Not the most productive day today but I did declutter about 3 inches off my hair - does that count?

Times10 · 12/10/2019 18:53

I spent 30 minutes tidying up my bedroom, looks a lot better, but no major outs. I mean, lots of things left the room, but only to be relocated in their rightful place.

bakesalesally · 12/10/2019 18:54

Please can I join? Am currently chucking out...

I just came home after 3 weeks away training. Wowzers. But the kick up the bum I needed. Currently getting rid of two old sleeping bag, gym stuff that was bought two years ago and never used, bowls and washing baskets with broken handles. My friend is coming on Tuesday to help me tackle the Hall way cupboards... when I go to the tip on Wednesday should have a carful...

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 12/10/2019 19:45

I’ve realised I did manage some outs today - I used a five minute window of time to rid the medicine cupboard of expired meds. I thought I was pretty on top of that, but ai still managed to find about 6 or 7 bottles to go.

SandAndSea · 12/10/2019 22:21

Well done, peeps! And welcome to the thread, @bakesalesally.

I'm in the final throes at my mum's.

I've descaled the shower - it needs more but looks a lot better now.

We've had a home made stew from leftover veg and food for the week is all lined up.

I've even decluttered her eyebrows!

Thank you for the welcomes. Not massively productive today. A lady was meant to be collecting a Baby chair and a play mat from me from Freecycle but is hopefully coming tomorrow instead.

One of the reasons for the declutter is that we are not having any more children so we can get rid of all the baby things and I go back to work on the first week of November so anything I can do to make the next couple of years easier I’m going to do it.

I did throw away an old pair of shoes that were split right through the middle of the sole. They were sparkly trainers I loved. I bought replacements a month ago but didn’t throw the old ones out.

Mumista · 13/10/2019 09:43

Two bags of toys passed on this week. Today I'm going for paperwork filing / recycling and have already deleted a load of emails.

DH has piles of work stuff at home but fingers crossed that should all be going this week.

Nice big out this weekend as my old car has gone for scrap (I know it’s not technically in my house but I’m taking the wins where I can). Few more items in the clothes recycling & I’ve put all my summer items away till next year so at least they are stored away properly.

Welcome @bakesalesally!

Hope everyone has had a good weekend.

Finally managed to do a run to the clothing bank - got rid of 7 big bags of clothes and shoes that had been cluttering up our garage!

Also found an old stained towel for the rag bag, and sorted out the airing cupboard and the drawers underneath DD’s new bed so everything is looking a bit tidier!

BrutusMcDogface · 13/10/2019 18:59

I’ve done nothing as I’ve been swag for the weekend but am planning on going for it big time this coming week.

I think I might start with the kitchen.

BrutusMcDogface · 13/10/2019 19:00

Away, not swag!!

Mynameisnotthis · 13/10/2019 20:24

Still mainly damage limitation here with DH still out the game.
However in recent days I’ve managed to clear the top of the chest of drawers in baby’s room of what was a mix of new clothes and outgrown clothes. Also cleared out the bibs drawer in the living room. Today’s outs were 2 unused dummies!

brutus I always count things twice! Once when sorted and again when actually out Blush makes me feel better!

Sold another 8 items/bundles on eBay today so they’ll be packed up and posted this week.
