What should I do with an obsolete bread knife?

Our bread knife was getting to the end of its life and needed replacing. Dh bought a brilliant new bread knife yesterday.

so what do we do with the old one?

I don't want to.put it in the bin in case whoever sorts through the rubbish cuts themselves. Dh thinks it's fine as the rubbish-sorters wear gloves. I still think there's a risk to them.

Dh thinks we should put it in the recycling bin as it has a plastic handle and metal blade. I think if it has to go in a bin it should go in the black bin as it will be crushed.

Any advice? So far I've just put it back in the drawer!

Considering the amount of knife crime in this country at the moment could you really live with yourself if you disposed of it incorrectly via a tip or general refuse and it ended up injuring or killing someone ? Hmm id care more about that than the cost of parking

I had this exact situation a few weeks ago after a declutter. After sticking them (5 in total) in a corner for a while wondering what to do with them, I took them to the local dump. Asked the guys if they had a knife bin but they just went in the metal skip.

What an odd post. Do you really think the perpetrators of knife crime are rummaging through bins at the tip for their weapons? Hmm

I took ours to the metal bin at the tip, it specifically said kitchen knives could be put in it.

@LucaFritz it's a blunt breadknife with no sharp point. It really couldn't be used in any way to stab someone If it was my chefs knife I might feel differently but that is very unlikely to ever become unusable.

Dh drives past the tip on the way to work, I'll get him to take it there and ask advice. If they can dispose of it safely/legally then that seems the best solution.

Seeing as knives aren't allowed in our recycling bin, I would have chucked it in the landfill bin without giving it a second thought.

Chucking it in the scrap metal recycling bin at the tip is probably a good idea but only if you don't need to make a special journey to get there. Ours is a not very environmentally friendly 20 mile round trip.

@ConFusion ours is also a 20mile round trip but DH drives past it when going to the station twice a week.

I'm definitely sending dh to the tip with it!
