Toddler peed on my brand new sofa and now it stinks! Please help

My friend's supposedly potty trained ds did a massive wee on my new sofa yesterday.
The covers are not removable and loads of the wee went down the crevice between 2 cushions.

We sponged it with wet sponges a few times then tried to absorb as much moisture as we could with dry towels. It now smells!!

Last night we put loads of bicarbonate of soda all over it and hoovered it off this morning but it still smells especially the crevice.

Please advise! After you've told me I'm stupid for getting a sofa without removable covers which is fair enough.

Maybe try a pet urine remover as it breaks down the odour molecules. You can buy them in places like pets at home

GlitterSparkle85 · 28/09/2019 10:52

Bi-carb sprinkle on your sofa(I'd test s small patch first to see if it stains)leave for 10-15mins vacuum it up should disappear!Good luck X

longtimelurkerhelen · 28/09/2019 10:55

Put some salt in a porous bag and get it as far into the crevice as you can. Once you have as got it as dry as you can, get the spray as pp said and soak it (after testing a small patch to make sure it doesn't leave a stain).

If you can't get the spray today, use 3 parts water 1 part white vinegar. Then dry as much as you can.

longtimelurkerhelen · 28/09/2019 10:57

Also as it is drying try to put something in the crevice to hold it open so it can dry.

AmateurSwami · 28/09/2019 10:58

Can you get it professionally cleaned?

I’m currently in urine hell caring for my incontinent elderly grandparent and my whole
House stinks 😔

feelinghelplesstoday · 28/09/2019 10:59

Make a solution with bio washing powder. The bio ones contain enzymes to break it down. Sponge on and blot with clean towel xx

HeartvsHead · 28/09/2019 10:59

The febreeze fabric spray works wonders for neutralising smells (having just potty trained a toddler and toilet trained a puppy!)

morrisseysquif · 28/09/2019 11:00

Spray with Dettol anti bacterial spray.

Sycamoretrees · 28/09/2019 11:06

Definitely go to pets at home and buy an enzyme cleaning product designed for urine, the enzymes break down the proteins and removes the smell and any stain. Magic.

Mrsjayy · 28/09/2019 11:11

Yes get the pet sprays they do work or Rug doctor do an odour neutriliser spray for carpets and soft furnishings can you put a towel down the side andlet the water soak up before you try again it is probably stll damp

Pointof0return · 28/09/2019 11:12

Thank you for fab replies. It's currently got another load of dry kitchen roll crammed into to the crevice to absorb as much as possible.

Bicarb overnight was quite effective on the flat surface of the cushions but it's the crevice now that stubbornly stinks.

Will try another of these methods and report back.

aaAAARRGghhhh....!

So we put diluted biological washing liquid on it last night and propped the crevice open all day today to dry... It's been moderately effective in reducing the piss smell but it's left an awful water mark on the upholstery. It looks awful.

DP is now saying it's because I made the washing liquid solution too strong. Nightmare. Further advice v welcome!

Contents insurance?

Wavey123 · 30/09/2019 20:29

I’d claim on insurance, or if I was your friend be offering some money towards another one, I couldn’t walk away after my child had done that on a new sofa

AmateurSwami · 30/09/2019 20:30

Honestly I’d just fork out for a professional clean. My 3 seater was about £70. My (Dfs) sofa gets so marked even from water so
I wouldn’t necessarily say the bio stuff caused it. And you could hardly leave the pee smell!

AmateurSwami · 30/09/2019 20:31

Agree that’s as others say, friends should be paying for this!

MissCherryCakeyBun · 30/09/2019 20:33

House insurance

CottonSock · 30/09/2019 20:36

Call the professionals!

Pointof0return · 30/09/2019 21:46

It's an insurance job isn't it.
My friend offered to pay for cleaning straight away.
I did pay an extra amount when buying the sofa for stain insurance I think so I'll look into that tomorrow. DP thinks we have probably invalidated it by messing around with it ourselves and making it worse 😩

Update again (I am v vigilant about updating my threads!)

Insurance have sent a "care pack" of stain remover we have to try ourselves and if it doesn't work they will send a person round to clean it. Not tried it yet because away for the weekend.

Will come back and update... Hope you can all contain your excitement Smile
