How many laundry baskets do you have?

Babyfg · 16/09/2019 08:17

I currently live in a two bedroom flat with partner and two children. We currently have one laundry basket (with three sections) in my bedroom for all of our washing (darks/lights/towels and cloths). We'll be moving soon to a four bedroom house and was just wondering what people's laundry systems were!
My children are toddlers, so too young to do their own laundry (which will be something I will be encouraging at an age appropriate time!)
I was thinking maybe have a main one in the main bathroom!

So basically I'm just being nosy and looking for any good tips or ideas!

I live with dp and one dc. We have three, one in our room, one in dc room and one for transit. Dc is five so puts his laundry in the basket. Either I or dp go through the two dirty baskets every couple of days and make up a load of darks or lights from both depending on what needs doing. That gets dumped in the transit basket and taken down to be washed, then emptied back into it when it's clean to be hung out to dry.

We could probably realistically do with two light/dark baskets, one for us and one for dc, but I've just never got around to bothering to buying them

BrokenWing · 16/09/2019 08:27

Laundry bins in bedrooms so clothes can go directly into them when taken off (otherwise dh and teenagers clothes just end up bedroom floor and stay there)

3 smaller laundry baskets (which slot inside each other for storage) for transporting/sorting dirty/clean laundry between bedrooms and washing machine.

Shmithecat2 · 16/09/2019 08:29

Just one, in our bedroom, for 3 of us.

Pepperama · 16/09/2019 08:33

One big basket in bathroom all mixed in, plus a wicker basket for transporting laundry. I wash twice a week and just divide into a light and a dark pile on the day

PreschoolYes · 16/09/2019 08:33

Two, one for me and dh, one for DS.

DistantVworp · 16/09/2019 08:37

We have 5 on the landing - darks, lights, brights, whites and towels / delicates / anything else. Kids got trained v early which one to use for what

BunchMunch · 16/09/2019 08:40

One main washing basket on the landing.
I use ikea bags to move washing around, much easier than using baskets up and down stairs.

CassianAndor · 16/09/2019 08:43

3 - one for me/DH, one for DD and one in the kitchen for tea towels and cloths.

I don't get children doing their own laundry. Surely each member of the family doesn't do their own separate load?

Verily1 · 16/09/2019 08:46

One in every bedroom

howdoesitworkwork · 16/09/2019 08:48

The kids are old enough to put their dirty clothes in their own wash basket. Train them now, it's worth it!

PonderingPanda · 16/09/2019 08:50

I have one in my ensuite for me. The boys have one in their room each. There is a separate one on the landing just for white washing i.e the school shirts as otherwise come Sunday evening I'll have forgotten to do them!

missnevermind · 16/09/2019 08:51

I have about 14 baskets😯
2 large ones. One on each landing to collect dirty washing. Everybody just tosses their own in. These are carried down when full and contents washed and sorted.
The smaller ones are for sorting between the machines. 10kg washing machine and 3 kg dryer. And then folding and sorting. 1 basket per person to be carried back to their rooms and put away. Me and DH, 2 grown up DSs and a 10 and 8 yo.

soundsystem · 16/09/2019 08:54

We have 4, colour-coded as follows:

Black: Darks
Red: Coloured
Blue: Whites
Grey: Towels and bedding

Washing goes into the appropriate one then anyone can bung on a load when it's full, so pre-sorted, as it were.

We're two adults, two children and a baby, in a 4-bedroom house. We implemented this system when we moved, when we were in a two-bed flat we just had one basket.

Even the 2.5 year old knows what goes in what basket so when he takes his clothes off they go in the right one. 4 year old enjoys seeing which basket will "win" (I.e. get filled first and get to go in the machine).

(I promise I do normal fun things with my children as well, laundry isn't the only entertainment!)

hubbletelescope · 16/09/2019 08:59

Thanks for this thread. I am finding it oddly fascinating.

We have one dirty laundry basket and 3 baskets for carrying clean washing about for 3 of us. We are moving shortly and I will be getting a darks and lights basket to save rifling through the basket to get a load.

Jammiebammie · 16/09/2019 09:00

I think we’ve done every configuration possible over the years! 5 of us.
We now have one in upstairs bathroom, one in downstairs bathroom, our bedroom and utility room. I find this works the best for us.
Used to have one in each bedroom but it would take forever collecting everyone’s items. Our youngest dd is disabled so always has extra washing/sheets. Hers usually has to go straight to utility room or in downstairs bathroom as that’s where she gets her most of her personal care done. Upstairs bathroom is for the older 2 dds. Our bedroom is a newer one to try and stop dh from dumping his clothes on the floor. Utility room is usually for surplus items, tea towels etc and clean baskets there too.

ExpletiveDelighted · 16/09/2019 09:10

One in each bedroom (largest in ours) and one in the bathroom. All mixed, we don't have space for separate ones but its easy enough to pick out a load of coloured
or a load of whites. We use Ikea blue bags to transport to the machine and back, these live in a basket in our bedroom when not in use. The DCs are teens but don't do their own laundry as they'd never fill a machine load of whites on their own. They do share the load though, they empty their baskets into the big one in our room, them any of us that sees its getting full fills an Ikea bag from that, tops it up with anything from the bathroom one on the way past and puts it on to wash, dries it, sorts it, all shared between us. So I might put the wash on, DS hangs it out, DD brings it in and Dh sorts it.

Babyfg · 16/09/2019 09:28

Wow this is actually really interesting! A transit basket is really sounding like my way forward I wouldn't of thought of that! I was thinking if I had two many how would I know I had a load/ transit it etc.
My children are 3 and 1 and they put clothes in the wash basket (not really in the appropriate slots but the right area 🤣) and sometimes if they're interested they'll help put the clothes in/out of the washing machine. I'm quite big on them doing simple chores (life skills and all that), like taking they're plates to the kitchen/ throwing rubbish in the bin/picking up toys. I won't lie though it can be a bit hit and miss with their little chores sometimes 🤣
@missnevermind 14 is impressive you must be a laundry queen!

We just have two that we all use, one on the first floor and one on the second floor.

Grambler · 16/09/2019 09:40

5 bedroom house. Two carry baskets in the main bathroom for lights and darks.

Tbh I've tried putting baskets in the kids rooms - they just stay there until I'm presented with an overflowing basketful of things they want washed and dried in the next 45 minutes. I've tried moving the baskets into the hallway but that got complaints too. This way I take a basket down when it's full, put the contents in the machine and take it back upstairs.

floravus · 16/09/2019 09:45

Two. One in our bedroom for everyone's clothes, one in the bathroom for nappies. We used to have a clothes one in the bathroom too but I find it easier just having one as it's easier to keep track of when to put a wash on.

PizzaCrunch · 16/09/2019 09:46

One in DS' bedroom, one in mine and a plastic basket for transit if its going on the line outside.

DS is 10 and will bring whatever colours I ask for through to be washed. Our flat is all one level and small so that's all we need.

HarleyMerlin · 16/09/2019 11:21

This made me count and realise that we have 5 :) for four people in a 3 bed house. Sounds like a lot esp considering I'm not precious about separating!

One in our room, one in DS's room for mixed laundry - he is 7 and knows to put dirty clothes in there. We have one in the bathroom for whites which we all use. Then two for 'transit'. I find I need two because I'll often have a load in the washing machine and another load in the dryer/outside. Weirdly interesting...

Justabadwife · 16/09/2019 11:35

We have 1, but it isn't really used. But I do washing in a weird way.
I don't seperate clothes, nothing we have seems to run, and I dont have to wash white shirts anymore.
So i just put a wash on every nearly every night or first thing the next morning of all uniforms worn that day and any towels used more than twice.
Then if the weather is nice, it goes on the line as soon as I'm up, or upto my mums to go in the dryer.
Then i have a plastic transporting basket, that I fold the clothes into, and then they get put away usually straight away.

Oceanbliss · 16/09/2019 12:02

We have 3. 1 for me, 1 for dd and 1 for towels etc. Mine is in my bedroom. Dd's used to be in her bedroom but is in the bathroom now since she created a fun game of adding her clean, unworn clothes from her drawers and wardrobe and mixing them in with the dirty clothes every day Grin. Also, more convenient for her, getting undressed for her bath she can throw her clothes straight into the hamper.

Jellyshoeswithdiamonds · 16/09/2019 12:02

5 for four adults.
One for each person in their bedrooms.
Fifth one is for whites, I put that in the bathroom.

Bedding and towels I collect/strip beds then wash weekly. These don't need their own baskets.

I do separate washes for each person, I wait until the laundry bins are full(ish), I've found this is less time sorting. They know all their clothes will be together when they go looking for something that hadn't been ironed yet. My dd and dh live away so only bring home washing on weekends so doing separate loads is much easier. We do have LOTS of clothes Blush

Then I have 6 transit baskets, I line dry so fold as they come off the line and put neatly in these big baskets, to save on ironing. Or hung on hangers, most of our clothes go on hangers. We have a LOT of hangers Blush

Also have folding crates with our initials on stacked in a tower in my utility which is for ironing, not enough room to put the baskets into a storage system so what doesn't get ironed the next morning goes in the stacking baskets.

During the week, I iron every morning for at least an hour, got a press so zip through quite a bit in an hour. I don't find it a chore.
