Removing black mould (?) from wool blanket - pics attached

My mum gave me this woollen blanket that was knitted for my siblings and I when we were tiny. I think it's been stored inside drawers/storage boxes for a long time and now has these black marks on, potentially some kind of mould?

I've tried soaking it in the bath with some non-bio but that didn't help at all. Can anyone recommend a good way to remove these stains, if at all possible? I'd love to use it for DC2 who is due in 8 weeks.

Thanks in advance!

I’m really not sure, as it’s wool, and mould removers are usually harsh on fabric. Maybe leaving it in the sun as much as possible will help?

CottonSock · 08/09/2019 15:58

I used a spray for boat fabrics, but it could bleach it. Try Sun first

is it wool or acrylic?

NannyR · 08/09/2019 16:02

Is it actually wool or is it acrylic yarn? If it's acrylic it will stand up to a bit more washing/scrubbing. You could try washing it with some oxy action bleach powder (like vanish).

I don't think you can save it if it is wool, bleach or bleach based products to kill the mould will dissolve the fibres in wool.

It doesn't look like wool though, it might have some wool content but those colours look more like acrylic and that would have been more practical for a baby blanket.

It's crocheted and it's a pretty simple pattern, it wouldn't be hard to recreate, you'd just need to find similar colours.

Have a look and see if violets Earth friendly bleach will be suitable. It’s magic stuff...pricey but if you can’t use it for this it will eventually come in handy for any baby related stains.

Violets mineral bleach. It is amazing. It's colour safe, so won't bleach any colour out, and gets rid of mould in a few hours soak. Sometimes I have to do two soaks or a few hours, Changing the water/violets in between. Use the warmest water you think the wool will cope with.

Thank you everyone!
DM said it was wool but it does feel acrylic-y to me. Will try the violets bleach stuff for sure though and if not then maybe I'll try a spin with a bit of bio on a cool wash.

I'd love to recreate it @FlaviaAlbia but last time I crocheted it was under the hawk like eye on a nun at my convent school! I've buried those memories deep...!

Ha, sorry for reminding you! I remember getting shouted at in school because I could only do a massive crochet chain and couldn't join it up Grin
