Inherited real fur coats - how to dispose of them

My Dad took on the task of clearing out his aunt's house after she died. She had a fur stole and full fur coat, possibly mink, bought in New York in the 1950s. DH does amateur drama and says that the drama groups he's in won't want them as people won't wear them. I really don't want them in the house, neither does Dad. Short of putting them in the rubbish, is there anything else we could do with them? eBay? Feel a bit bad about trying to make money off these

I’d just sell them, they’ve been killed already, surely the waste is worse?

UterusesBeforeDuderuses · 25/08/2019 22:18

PETA take donations of fur coats, which they either use in demonstrations, use in animal shelters for bedding or donate to the homeless x

Benjispruce · 25/08/2019 22:19

Homeless.

sunsalutations · 26/08/2019 14:55

Thanks for the suggestion of PETA. Hadn't thought of that. Much appreciated

I was going to suggest a drama club, but read your previous comment about one club not accepting them. When I was in sixth form the drama club had some furs which were donated, so possibly a school? Or a vintage shop might actually buy them from you.

purpleleotard · 26/08/2019 15:04

I donated inherited furs to local amateur dramatic group. Yes they did accept them.

Windygate · 26/08/2019 15:06

There are dealers etc who will buy your unwanted fur, easy to find a few online. Maybe consider selling them and making a donation to a charity.

Apileofballyhoo · 26/08/2019 15:06

You could sell and donate the money to an animal charity.

milveycrohn · 26/08/2019 15:10

Sold my MIL's mink coat on ebay. Did not get much for it, but I thought it was prefereable to putting in the bin.

mathsquestions · 26/08/2019 15:53

I know of a drama club that will accept them. Happy to collect if in London.

stucknoue · 26/08/2019 16:13

Specialist dealer?

Bodear · 26/08/2019 16:15

I’ll happily take them off your hands OP and pay for delivery to mine. I’ll also make a donation to charity if that will help. What size is the coat?

Ligresa · 26/08/2019 16:17

Keep them and wear them in the privacy of your own home when the weather gets really cold. They'll save on heating!

wibbletooth · 26/08/2019 16:21

I’d try to get a valuation for them before throwing or giving them away. Then you can donate the money raised to an animal charity or one your aunt would have liked - seems more sense as they are old ones that can’t be resuscitated. Then you’ll at least feel that they have done something worthwhile rather than become landfill, dressing up box contents or somebody else profiting from them.

DrCoconut · 26/08/2019 16:27

Re enactment group specialising in 40's/50's?

aquarianaura · 26/08/2019 16:28

Please don't donate to PETA. They do not care about animals. They do not do any good. Please look at this link and research further: m.ranker.com/list/messed-up-peta-facts/laura-allan

List on eBay, send to charity shops, give to the homeless, etc. I know a lot of people hate even vintage fur but with it being old I don't mind it at all and a lot of others feel the same. In my eyes it's worse to eat an animal that has come from a battery farm and killed horrifically than it is to wear a coat of an animal killed decades ago when that person didn't know better (just my feelings, best way I can explain it) so I don't see it on the same level as new fur (which is disgusting and should be illegal).

Someone will snap it up on ebay, and they often go for a fair amount. And you can donate the money to actual good, preferably local animal charities.

Thehouseintheforest · 26/08/2019 18:29

Took my grandmothers full length Mink to Bonham auction house and got 12 k for it.. would like to say I donated it to some animal charity.. but bought a car as I'm a district nurse . Money well spent in my book. !

Wiltshirelass2019 · 26/08/2019 18:31

Stay away from peta they’re batshit crazy as don’t really give a shit about animals. Take it to a vintage shop

justasking111 · 26/08/2019 18:35

They can fetch a lot of money. Our local charity ship them off to London auction house and bank the proceeds.

Thornhill58 · 26/08/2019 18:40

They are vintage fur. I'll say sell it and give the money to your Dad if he needs it or keep it. Do something good with the money if it makes you feel better.
No money to PETA please.

justasking111 · 26/08/2019 18:53

PETA are fruit loops.

Sittinonthefloor · 26/08/2019 19:04

What aquaria said. Also don’t forgot that fur coats are just hairy leather coats.

50shadesofblackclothing · 26/08/2019 21:00

Buying a fur coat is unethical because it's encouraging the trade etc but vintage fur is different isn't it? Sell it or keep it as an investment of sorts. If/ when I sold it I'd give 25% to an animal charity, whichever was closest my heart.
