Food storage containers for specific items?

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 11/08/2019 09:11

Boring post alert! Sorry.

I’m trying to find clear plastic containers specifically for some items in the kitchen - particularly sliced bread, flour, and jacobs crackers.

I have tried putting them in tins but they just get forgotten and go mouldy (or in the case of flour get overlooked and a new one bought).

In order to economise on space i would like the boxes to fit these things as exactly as possible. Flour still in it’s bag. Standard loaf of bread. Obviously the websites don’t provide this handy advice, so i thought i would ask the hive mind if anyone had one that did the job exactly that they could recommend? Thinking of sistema/ oxo / lock & lock type containers. Thank you!

This thread is old so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but we’ve very recently refreshed our best food storage containers page with plenty of great options for cupboards, as recommended by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful.

Betterware had boxes for flour.

MyNameIsJane · 11/08/2019 09:23

I’ve tried to find the ones I bought but the site isn’t good to navigate on my mobile. Sorry.

I got some nice jars for my flour, I think they were only from Wliko. You can see the flour and i've used blackboard labels and chalk pen to write on why they are. I'd take a picture but I'm stuck under a feeding newborn at the minute.

No idea about the crackers though so watching with interest!

madmother1 · 11/08/2019 09:26

I freeze my bread and just use what I need on a daily basis. It only takes a few moments to thaw

ErrolTheDragon · 11/08/2019 09:31

I think Lakeland usually have some specific containers inc for bread and flour too.

NoLeopard · 11/08/2019 09:56

Dp's mum has plastic bread and cracker storage that is in two halves that slot into each other. As the item gets eaten you push the two halves in so doesn't take up wasted space. Not sure where they're from though.

ExpletiveDelighted · 11/08/2019 10:01

Perhaps go to a supermarket with a big home section and pick up the bread, flour etc then take them to the storage shelf and check out the boxes there? I use one big clip and lock box for all my bags of baking stuff - flour, icing sugar, soft brown sugar etc.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/08/2019 10:17

Flour etc I just use a ziplock bag, or freezer bag with a Klippit.

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 11/08/2019 13:03

Thank you all - especially Errol, i’ve ordered those sistema cracker jars.

Unfortunately i’ve tried having nice looking tins but my family seem incapable of opening them and looking inside so the food gets wasted. I’ve also looked in supermarkets whilst clutching the relevant items, but have never found anything the right size. Flour i would like to just plonk down in a right-size container inits bags, as if i remove the paper i lose the type/best by info, and if i put it in a ziplock it just makes a bit mess each time it gets used.

Sorry to sound so fussy - i was hoping somone would go “oh i have a XXX which is perfect.” I can go back to googling myself, but thank you all again.

I have one big baking plastic tub. In it I can fit 3 different types of flour, icing sugar, yeast, colourings, dried fruit, golden syrup etc. I found this to be better as before, like your family, everything would be forgotten about in a tin. It's also really handy as it's all to hand when I need it.

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 11/08/2019 14:15

I think that’s a great idea but mine has to fit in the available cupboards as my house kitchen is full to the gunnels already, so just flour bag sized would be ideal. If i have anything else out on the surfaces i won’t be able to actually cook!

For flour sugar etc, I use these with and use a chalkboard pen to write type of flour and use by date on.

I use this one for bread

My big plastic baking box lives in a cupboard, with a basket on top for baking powder, cake decorations etc, I think it saves space having them all in one rather than separate boxes

I have stub that holds 2 bags of flour (tipped out) it's Tupperware brand. For bread I leave it the packet to be honest and crackers too as we eat them at once (they like the Aldi rosemary crackers)

Fizzypoo · 11/08/2019 17:36

I agree @ExpletiveDelighted my baking tub is full and in a cupboard. It has everything that would be in a cupboard but put together in one.

Be1atrix · 15/08/2019 11:08

You need OXO Pops containers! Go to Lakeland and try them all out, then buy them on Amazon for cheaper.

MyNameIsJane · 15/08/2019 18:36

Or try Home Bargains for good value canisters.

MitziK · 16/08/2019 08:56

Pound shops usually have all the different sizes, as do most larger supermarkets.

Waitrose/Ocado tend to sell multipacks of lock & lock containers if you don't do QVC/want a brand rather than a poundshop or supermarket version.

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 29/08/2019 10:37

So just to answer my own boring question in case it is of any use to anyone else:

Lock & Lock containers are perfect for whole bags of flour - the 1.3L fits a 1kg bag, and the 1.8L fits a standard 1.5kg bag.

The Sistema KLIPIT cracker container recommended above is perfect for crackers, and the large Sistema pp recommended is good for bread (although too large to be the perfect size for a single loaf - will keep my eyes open for a perfect fit). Thank you all for suggestions. My kitchen has never looked so tidy.

Glad you are sorted (nearly!)

Sweetpea55 · 30/08/2019 05:52

Lake Land do good containers for pre sliced meat the sort you buy for sandwiches.

NothingWithoutEffort · 30/08/2019 19:03

We're Lock & Lock converts here - we have a whole wall of them 😄. I particularly like the square 5L ones.
