Electricity EEEK.

I've just moved into a new property, I was privately renting and now I'm in a housing association property. It's a small 2 bed flat that runs solely on electric.
I can't help but think there is a problem due to the astounding cost of running this place. It's a prepayment meter and we have spent £10 in 3 days. 3 DAYS?!? I honestly dont know how, it's not like the lights are on all day and we tumble 6 billion things. I do a wash every other day, 1 person showers a day with electric shower, the TV and sky box are probably on a lot of the day but that's it. We do have storage heaters but they have been turned off at the mains since we moved in seeing as it's so warm!

Since we moved in a 26 days ago we've topped up £90. I've contacted the provider SSE who told me to fill in an online form, I sent that off 3 weeks ago. There is no debt on the meter.
We had a meter previously with utilita on a 2 bed house and with gas and electric in the summer months we spent about £15 a week on both gas and electric.
Anyone else electric only able to give me an idea of their costs 😭
This can't be right surely?!

We have arranged a switch to utilita but they are saying 21 days and we only did it a few days ago! Confused

I have an electric only flat but I pay quarterly which in the summer it's about £160 winter time £260.

30under · 27/07/2019 19:51

For electric I pay approx £60/month - but we have oil too.

Can you check there’s not an immersion heater switched on hidden in the airing cupboard ?

CJCW17 · 27/07/2019 19:55

What would you guys say your usage was like? And what size property are you in?
The other night we used £2.50 overnight with nothing but things on standby. Providers are useless as they are just telling me to try energy saving bulbs which doesn't help if the bulb isn't on 😂

Notageek - we do have an immersion heater, we tested to see if it made a difference leaving it on all day vs only turning it on when we needed it and it was actually 10p - I know massive saving - cheaper to leave it on all day!

Is there a high standing charge?

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 27/07/2019 20:06

Suggest here switching to a standard credit meter - won't the HA allow that? There's also a quick fill-in link to find best pre pay supplier.

I guess you need to work out how many units/Wh you’ve used and the cost ..is it the usage thats the problem or the cost. Here’s some details on usage www.cse.org.uk/advice/advice-and-support/how-much-electricity-am-i-using

I have been all electric for many years. I am now utterly shocked at how the price of it has gone up and the bills we at getting, when we are being so careful and not using it when we really need to! I am getting a quote to have gas installed as I can't stand being cold in the winter and it still costing a fortune.

Frankley · 27/07/2019 20:41

Sorry, OP, that doesn't help you at all. It was a rant at the electricity board! I can't believe how much we paid for so little last winter. I don't know what the answer is.

CJCW17 · 27/07/2019 20:50

I'm going to monitor the usage from this moment and see what the usage is over night 😂
Thanks for the advice.
I cannot even imagine how much it would cost if I was also using the storage heaters 🤮

If you have economy 7 or economy 10 make sure you use washing machine, shower and as much as you can using the off peak hours.

RosaWaiting · 27/07/2019 23:04

All electric here
Something sounds odd
60 a month, one bed.

I don’t leave anything on standby though, the router is off at night too.

I would check on standing charges. Is your meter fully in your flat, any risk of anyone else using your electricity?

DianaT1969 · 27/07/2019 23:22

Can you turn all power off at the mains overnight. Use your phone torch if you have to get up in the night. Then when you switch it on in the morning, compare the meter reading with the night before. Do you know your daily standing charge and your consumption rate? If not, find out asap and compare online.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 30/07/2019 11:18

Switch everything properly off (no standby) and check if your meter keeps turning. If it does you either have left sth on, somebody uses your line or the thing is faulty.

Happend to a neighbour - sb knowledgable had hooked his workshop onto her meter.

MunchMunch · 30/07/2019 18:43

I'm in a 4 bed semi HA house. Both electric and gas.
I'm in the northern east but I'm on pre-payment meters with SSE. We are a household of 5 and run A LOT of electrics (3 gaming pc's, combo boiler as well as all the usual things plugged in) I'd say we use about £20/£25 per week.

Yours sounds really excessive especially using £2.50 overnight.

MunchMunch · 30/07/2019 18:46

I should say that £20/25 per week is just electric. We hardly use any gas as it's just for the combi boiler and shower and central heating in the winter.

QforCucumber · 02/08/2019 16:18

is the fridge/freezer/Washing machine an older one? The difference we noticed when switching to a newer ! rated one was amazing!
