Dusty house - how long to get it dust free?

3 Weeks ago we did a massive blitz on an asthmatics house whilst they are away. The whole house was done, walls were wiped down and curtains washed or vacuumed.

I've had the windows open every day, I've been vacuuming every week but there is still a lot of dust coming up.

I think the dust is in the air and is settling down, it still feels dusty inside. I also think some is embedded deep in the carpet and slowly coming up.

I'm amazed by how much is still being collected. How long do you think it will take to become clean?

Have you considered an air filtration system ?

caughtinanet · 21/07/2019 18:24

Can you get a house dust free?

How ever often I dust it comes back again almost immediately.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 21/07/2019 18:30

I don't think you can get it dust free. Most dust is minute particles of humans isn't it????

I've got an air purifier, that helps.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 21/07/2019 18:31

Quentin Crisp said that if you leave dusting for 3 years, it doesn't get any worse Grin

MyShinyWhiteTeeth · 21/07/2019 18:58

It feels like the dust had all settled and we've gone it and disturbed it.

When I vac at home there is a tiny amount picked up and I don't need to empty the container for months. Here it is half full every week.

I've even been vacuuming the air. I wonder if I should just let it settle. It's not up to me to buy anything and I doubt the owner would consider it.

Quentin is wrong. It certainly does get worse!

Depends on the house.

Mine is really old and generates dust like you wouldn’t believe, particularly in high winds (not kidding!) I can dust in the morning and by evening it’s terrible again.

birdonawire1 · 21/07/2019 19:03

Carpets trap dust. They need to be gone

orangeshoebox · 21/07/2019 19:07

you can't get it dust free, you just can reduce it by cleaning regularly.
hoover and then damp dust all surfaces and mop all hard floors.

avoid flowers/plants, pets, candles, open flame heating/cooking.

what kind of vacuum cleaner are you using? the bagless kinds are mostly not very good for allergic people.

orangeshoebox · 21/07/2019 19:09

wrt carpet, yes they trap dust, but they also prevent dust from flying up.
can you get the carpets cleaned?

cattaxi · 21/07/2019 19:11

Dust with a damp cloth so you are trapping and removing dust, not just moving it around.
Our house has been really dusty from a complete renovation. Lots of damp cloth dusting & regular hovering has got on top of it. It’s taken months!

userxx · 21/07/2019 19:15

My house is dusty. You can't get rid of it, just keep dusting.

MyShinyWhiteTeeth · 21/07/2019 21:30

Their vac is a medical grade one with hepa filters but it was completely blocked with dust. It has been unblocked but still doesn't seem very good. I've been using my vac which is a pet hair vax and almost takes the carpet up with the suction.

We are borrowing a carpet washer and will try that next. I feel like we disturbed years worth of dust and made it a worse environment now as it's all air-born.

Damp dusting is good. How about hiring a rug doctor to, as it were, damp dust the carpet?

MyShinyWhiteTeeth · 21/07/2019 22:23

I'll do some more damp dusting again but I'm a bit restricted on time and also I'm not the most physically able.

We thought it would be a quick fix but the dust seems to be winning.

don't beat yourself up.
your efforts will make a big difference to your relative.

Ohyesiam · 22/07/2019 06:03

What sort of property is it?
I have an early Victorian workers cottage and the dust it produces is unbelievable. If we rent a holiday cottage I notice how much less dusty iris at the end of a week of no housework.
getting up the carpets would help

MyShinyWhiteTeeth · 22/07/2019 16:51

It's a terraced house with blocked up fireplaces. I spent a few hours vacuuming yesterday and then today I vacuumed the sofa and dining chairs.
