How to get stain off brass doorknob

This stain has appeared on the front of my beautiful new brass door knob. I don’t know what caused it. (It appeared there yesterday, the same day that someone fitted the door knob, so maybe the fitter caused it, but I can’t imagine how.) The stain doesn’t come out with a metal polishing cloth (imbued with polisher). Does anyone have any suggestions for removing it, please?

I would guess that, being brass and likely to oxidise, it was lacquered when it was made and the lacquerer has been scratched off. You could (carefully, to retain as much as possible) clean it with a cotton bud and brass, then revarnish it, maybe very lightly with clear nail polish?

Ketchup works miracles on brass. I'd be returning that door knob as faulty though - looks as though the lacquer is patchy.

Thank you for the replies. It is actually an unlacquered knob (done so that it can tarnish naturally, a look that some people like, including me!). When I rubbed it with a metal polishing cloth, the rest of the knob brightened up but the stain remained, so it must be something other than oxidisation.

That’s interesting about ketchup - I wonder whether it works just for oxidisation or whether it would also remove this stain. Might be worth a try!

Hi so I was cleaning the upstairs bathroom yesterday and normally I use normal bleach to clean the taps. This time my mum bought a strong bleach hapric bleach which without reading or using common sense that it could damage or ruin the taps. Know I have no idea what to do it’s not all bad but has some black stains, colour has changed a bit, I’ve used braso polish no help. So could anyone help me out or recommend something as these taps are not that old. I’ve read that Mass cream is good.

wowfudge · 17/07/2019 16:32

Sorry - on brass and gold coated taps bleach permanently discolours them. The only way to fix this is to replace them. There is no need to use bleach or cleaning products containing bleach on a sink or taps.

So it looks like I can’t do anything about it then 😖 not even maas cream? Nothing at all?

wowfudge · 17/07/2019 17:09

No, sorry.

Did he stain or lacquer the door while he was there - it must have been something he had on him if it was fine before hand. Could you try a little nail polish remover in case its danish oil or something he treated the door with ? Or alcohol if you have some

He did not stain or lacquer the door. He only fitted the door knobs, so I'm baffled as to how the knob got stained!
