Blocked sink - beef fat.

Tumbleweed101 · 09/07/2019 17:22

I’ve got a blocked sink - teenage DD tipped hot fat/oil into sink so she could leave the pan to soak. I’ve just got home and found the sink completely non draining.

Any ideas what I can use to unblock it? Can’t get into town for standard unblocker until tomorrow now. Just after ideas that might get it clear of standing water til then 😐🙄. Thank you.

Bail out as much water as you can then bleach, leave for a while then boiling water??

Teddybear45 · 09/07/2019 17:32

hot water with 5 or 6 dishwasher tablets dissolved in it should sort it out. You might need to do it several times.

Hot water and plenty of it, boil the kettle for at least the first lot to melt the fat and get it moving then run through lots more to properly clear it out.

Yup - you need to get as much boiling water down there as possible to melt it. Get the sink as empty as possible first then a kettle of boiling water down the sinkhole. It might not make much of a dent in which case leave it to work for a bit while you boil another kettle and do the same. And repeat.

This happened to us after a lunch party - friend of DHs trying to help just poured the entire contents of the roasting tin I'd used to make slow-cooked pork belly down the sink (he also poured a glass fo red wine all over the carpet on the same day). Took me about 4 hours to clear it. But after a kettle or two I noticed at least some of the water was going down and then it got better and better.

Once the water is flowing, fill sink with hot as you can stand soapy water and then run that down. Then keep running the hot water through it as otherwise it will just go and solidify further down the line and you'll have the same problem. Obviously use a proper drain unblocker tomorrow too.

That's how fatbergs happen. Sad

HypatiaCade · 09/07/2019 18:09

You might be better off unscrewing they ubend and scraping it out.

QueenBeee · 09/07/2019 18:10

I think fatbergs are made from the fat in your poo. 2-15% of your poo is fat according to google.

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 09/07/2019 18:12

If it's just the fat from one roasting tin then I'm sure a couple of kettles of boiling water will shift it.

Singlenotsingle · 09/07/2019 18:54

No, Queenbee. They're made when people tip hot fat down the sink. It travels down into the sewers, gets mixed up with wipes, nappies and other stuff, and sets hard.

Tumbleweed101 · 09/07/2019 20:09

Thanks everyone. It’s cleared now thank goodness through the suggestions above. Lots of soap and lots of boiling water!

Will be having a chat with dd so we don’t get caught again. Ideally without putting her off cooking 😂.

Soda Crystals can help as they help break down grease. I'd stick some down when you can to help keep it clear

Quietly expanding day after day, the congealed rancid masses of human waste, fat, oil and wet wipes are menaces
From the Thameswater website - so a bit of poo in there too Grin

Singlenotsingle · 09/07/2019 23:16

We won't argue over a bit of poo, QueenB

Fluffycloudland77 · 13/07/2019 07:08

If there’s a next time use your hair dryer on the u bend to melt it.

LoafofSellotape · 13/07/2019 08:22

Lots of washing up liquid is essential, followed by boiling water.

Glad it's cleared!

TapasForTwo · 13/07/2019 08:27

I am meticulous about not draining fat into the sink, but it is inevitable that some gets down there. I regularly pour boiling water and soda crystals down the plug hole to keep it clear and odour free.
