How to freshen up a newish carpet?

We have had a new carpet in our hall since December. It's still lovely and clean but we have a (slightly whiffy) pug who likes to sit on a particular landing, we live in a 3 storey modern townhouse, and the carpet there is starting to smell a bit of dog which I really don't like. I've read to sprinkle baking soda in the carpet, leave for 10 mins and hoover up to get rid of the smell but I'm unsure. Has anyone done this and had good results or can recommend anything else I can do?

The baking soda works, it's especially nice if you put a few drops of peppermint oil in with it before you sprinkle.

Baking soda worked on the fabric sofa that baby DS1 was slightly sick on so I’m willing to get good money it will work!

You could have the carpet professionally cleaned, and then try to prevent future recurrence by putting a washable rug down where your dog likes to sit. Then, when you notice the smell returning, you can just wash the rug.

But don't put a rug down if it's right at the top of a flight of stairs...in case anybody trips over it and falls downstairs

It is at the top of a flight of stairs which is why there's no rug down already! I don't really want to professionally clean the carpet yet, it's too new still! I'll try the baking soda. I try not to let him sit on it but it's hard!

Shake and vac is pretty good at freshening up doggy smells. And freshens up the vacuum!

Nuetradol is surprisingly good at removing whiffs, but if the pug is greasy or leaky it won't do much... pro cleaner time in that case.

You can also get a special Febreeze for pet smells

Pug isn't greasy or leaky just general doggy smell. Baking soda seems to have done the trick though thank you for all the suggestions!
