my mum swears by Topps tiles and they have braches everywhere but you need to say where you are if you want local recommendations...

Pabamella · 23/07/2007 10:54

Thanks,

topps tiles site is a bit confusing though, all the tile floor products say from 89p ect, which is obviously ridiculous and not the case, so it doesnt give you ideas on price.

Im in Manchester

i would suggest the laminate that looks like tiles it is fab hard wearing and reasonable price wise b&q sell it

Pabamella · 23/07/2007 10:58

I hope I dont sound like an idiot, but is laminate on a big roll, like a carpet?

or is it that stuff that clicks together?

the stuff that clicks together, it is really good and easy to lay you need some underlay stuff to go under it but you can buy that in b&q too loadsa colours we have dark slate colour and everyone thinks its real slate

Pabamella · 23/07/2007 11:09

Thanks

yea, I just spoke to my mate as she had that click together stuff down,

Am on serious budget so could I leave the vinyl down as underlay to save buying that?

thanks for your replies btw x

yes i think you could leave lino down

BonyM · 23/07/2007 12:34

I've just put B&Q slate effect vinyl tiles down in our bathroom. They look fabulous and are dead easy to lay - my dh was amazed at the fine job I did !

I laid them on top of the existing roll vinyl.

but tiles not good if you have floorbaords under them. In that situation laminate better or lino or whatever.

BettySpaghetti · 23/07/2007 15:07

If you actually go along to somewhere like Topps Tiles (they are often located in an area with loads of DIY,tile, carpet type places so shop around) you will find that they'll have end of range stock there too if you really want to keep the price down.

Just make sure you know how many square metres you need and take along a calculator -some places give prices per metre squared which is easy to work out but others give you a price per tile and then tells you how many tiles= 1 square metre.

LoonyLyraLovegood · 23/07/2007 15:11

We've got tiles. make sure you don't use Wickes floor tile grout, because it crumbles after a few months and keeps needing redoing.

You can tile over floorboards but you'll need to put down sheets of MDF first then tile on top of that.

I'd also strongly recommend that you get underfloor heating if you do tile, as they get very cold and uncomfortable in winter. You can get the electric type fairly cheaply.

ELR · 23/07/2007 16:33

use flexible adhesive and grout suitable for swimming pools that way it wont crack or crumble and is watertight

ELR · 23/07/2007 16:35

also never tile on mdf as it is not flexible and too expensive use sterling board

granarybeck · 23/07/2007 16:41

Not used them myself, but a friend got the click together flooring from Floors-to-go website. Hers looks good.

What about wooden flooring? They have some parawood flooring on that site for much cheaper than solid wood usually costs. It says it is real wood, just different kind.

Pabamella · 23/07/2007 20:13

I got click together granite look laminate from B&Q - worked out about 160.

will be great though

great, hope it looks good !!

We went to Topps Tiles - they were FANTASTIC, very helpful. We ordered some large rectangular floor tiles, which cost only about £3 each. Sounds a lot, but they were large tiles so we only needed 45 tiles to do the whole kitchen (well up to the units anyway) Add in the grout and tile adhesive and the total came to around £150 iirc.

Not bad at all, and the finished result looks very good (and looks like it should have cost a lot more!)
