Drying laundry outside - crease issues!

This has to be one of the most banal threads ever. However, I have bee puzzling over what I am doing wrong.
When I tumble dry clothes, they come out soft and quite a few don't need ironing. Whenever I dry laundry outside, it comes out full of creases and I spent 3 times as long doing the ironing, therefore negating some of the benefit of not using the tumble drier.
There's no difference in how the clothes are washed and I'm careful not to let anything get "crispy" by over drying it.
Please help me with some line drying tips!

Give each item a sharp flick from both hands before pegging it out, it stretches out a lot of the creases, softens and reduces ironing requirements.

What sort of line are you using?

If you are using a rotary line you need to be careful not to over-fill it as you need plenty of air to circulate. I put underwear on the inner lines and then work out to thickest and biggest things on the outer lines. I only use alternate lines and try and peg out to maximise air flow.

Whatever line you are using you need to empty the machine as soon as the washing cycle has finished and give stuff a quick shake before hanging to reduce creases and floof the fibres.

Ideally hang stuff inside out to prevent fading.

As a general rule, hang tops from the bottom and bottoms from the top. You need to think about where the peg marks might be for some fabrics.

Wash and dry with all fastenings undone.

Unless it's a very windy day line dried do need a bit more ironing. The sharp shake/snap makes a big difference....

Usuallyinthemiddle · 01/06/2019 21:14

It's in the shake!

Thank you for your replies. I have a huge rotary line which I am careful not to overfill. I think I am following the above advice already - my mother was a formidable housekeeping expert - I am careful to shake and peg out correctly - the pegs aren't causing an issue.

It's things like cotton t-shirts that are coming back with so many creases. I will keep trying. Maybe I need to be less fussy. Mum used to iron everything to perfection!

Stick then in the tumble dryer for a few mins when you bring them in.....they go super soft as though tumble driedGrin

It is just a fact, not something you are doing.

Tumble dry = no iron
Line dry = creased

concernedforthefuture · 01/06/2019 21:37

Give it a good shake before pegging out and bring it in as soon as it's dry (otherwise it gets too dry and crispy, with creases IYSWIM). You get less creases on a windy day.

wowfudge · 01/06/2019 22:43

Finishing the drying in the tumble dryer makes all the difference.

LoafofSellotape · 02/06/2019 10:01

Just shove it in the drier for 5 mins to iron out the wrinkles.

Don't oveload the washing machine. It makes a massive difference (my oh always overloads and the stuff requires loads of ironing). Slightly underfill and a shake and it's good to go with a brief iron.
