Cordless vacuums - too heavy?

I've been pining for a cordless vacuum cleaner thinking it would be easier to use and less physically tiring - just tried a few in JL and was really surprised how heavy they are.

Does anyone have any views on this subject? I have a 3 storey house and a chronic illness so it's tiring for me to carry my Miele cat and dog up flights of stairs and also difficult to hoover all the stairs.

Hi I have a trusty Sebo upright which is probably 10 years old, I can manage pushing the Sebo as it propels itself to a degree, but is sooo heavy to carry upstairs.

I was reluctant to spend too much money on a cordless, so I bought an AEG CX7 Animal on ebay, "as new" for under £100, purely as an experiment. As you say, it is heavy BUT once running it tootles along with minimum effort. It is ideal for a quick whip round.

It has a detachable unit for edges etc., but to be honest I find that too heavy to use. I will get the Sebo out and use a hose for edges and upholstery. One thing that has been great is that the head precisely fits sideways on my stair treads, so I can hoover the stairs if they need a quick once over. It is really good on hard floors, lino tile etc.

As for efficiency, I have been quite mortified by how fast the dust canister fills up! It is a faff emptying and the filter needs hand washing. If you could get a machine with a disposable bag/filter system that would be brilliant.

Hope that helps!

Cordless Dysons are light... I have the v7 and I find it really light to use

Summersunshine2 · 02/06/2019 20:14

I have a cordless Dyson too. Go in Currys and try them out. I was tempted to get a cordless shark but it was too heavy. The Dyson isn't. It's so much easier than carrying my big bulky vacuum cleaner from before.

We were searching out cordless vacuums just this morning. OP, why not get a cordless to leave plugged in upstairs and leave the heavy one on the ground floor? We think we'll get the new Vax one, it gets the best reviews in terms of value for money.

ISmellBabies · 02/06/2019 20:21

I got a cordless Dyson for the same reason as you op and it was ok, not too heavy, but it only lasted a couple of months before breaking/working intermittently. It's a pain in the arse. I then got a cordless shark, which works really really well and is reliable but it is heavy. There must be a third option but I'm not buying another one!!

Vax blade 2 gets great reviews and is cheaper than the dyson, that's 5e one I am considering at the moment

@ISmellBabies Dyson have excellent guarantees - have you tried to claim?

MummyParanoia101 · 02/06/2019 22:27

I've just got the Shark DuoClean Cordless TruePet IF260UK (the one with two batteries) and it's fab!! Shark do instalments too without any credit agreement. Sharkcordless.co.uk I think it was. 60 mins runtime (unless on boost) and lots of attachments. It also folds for storage. It's not the lightest in the world but I think you need a little bit of weight. I have rheumatoid arthritis in my hands and it's not too much for me

MummyParanoia101 · 02/06/2019 22:27

5 year warranty too :)

ISmellBabies · 03/06/2019 10:09

Summersunshine2 no, I bought it from an ebay shop so assume it wouldn't be covered.

I recommend the Hoover H-Free C300 cordless vacuum cleaner (model HFC324U). Just got one and it's very light, it has a light at the front to light up dark, dusty corners, and it's easy to empty and quick to recharge.

Thanks for the recommendations, really helpful Thanks

Love my cordless Dyson and would definitely recommend!

Do you find the dyson heavy though?
