When you invite someone round to your house for coffee, to what extent do you tidy up/clean before they arrive?

For me it depends on who is coming round to what extent I tidy up or clean ...
For a good mate, who knows me very well I don't do anything bar check that the toilets are flushed and DS hasn't left pee dribbles on the seat.
For a friend I am getting to know and wish to get to know better I will have a quick tidy up, may run a hoover around if the carpet looks like a bird table, check the bathrooms look respectable.
For a new friend that I have invited round for the first time I will have a proper tidy up, vacuum all over and clean the bathroom properly.

I will always, always, always check the toilet, though no matter who they are.

What about you? Are you a "Take me as I am, no matter who you are" type or do you have 'levels' like me?

I do the wedging my bedroom door closed with things so no one can get in. I also threaten ds1 with horrific consequences should he let friends go anywhere near the bedroom door

GryffindorGHOSTY · 21/07/2007 12:49

Am bumping this thread ...
I need to know whether people clean their toilets before they have visitors (or check it isn't gross) ...
BUMP
Regardless of messy house ... clutter and all that ...
DO YOU CHECK THE TOILETS???

Always check toilets and clean if required.

I always tidy round, extent to which depends on how is coming and for what reason.

GryffindorGHOSTY · 21/07/2007 12:53

You do don't you hula? Check toilets? I mean, it is NORMAL to check toilets are in a reasonable state before someone comes round isn't it?

I would CLEAN but just superficially: bathroom, kitchen, living room and all the floors but I don't go polishing cutlery, tidying insides of cupboards.

SSSandy2 · 21/07/2007 13:01

I would probably hide the ironing too

Hulababy · 21/07/2007 13:02

Definitely Ghosty. We have 3 bathrooms and I check all three toilets, just in case they need a quick clean. I even do the en suite one just in case.

DirtyGertiefromnumber30 · 21/07/2007 13:08

depends on level of friend. close friend - no, i wouldnt even check the toilet.

so, if someone called without warning, would you put the kettle on then run up to check the toilet ghosty?

GryffindorGHOSTY · 21/07/2007 13:17

The reason I ask is this:
I have made a new friend. She is lovely. Really friendly and lovely. She has been round a couple of times and I have been round there a couple of times. I am absolutely no domestic goddess and I usually don't judge ... each to their own, not my house etc etc. I have friends who range from anal, verging on OCD, tendencies with tidiness and cleanliness to scuzzy, messy, crap everywhere ... with most people being in between like me ...
So when I went to her house the last couple of times I noted that it was full of clutter but didn't really notice anything else.
Then on Friday DD and I went round - usual stuff everywhere and it was fine (in fact part of me was a bit envious of her obliviousness IYSWIM?). But then DD needed the loo ...
I don't think I can even type the state of that toilet. It was horrific ... pebble dashed bowl, pee splatters in the seat AND LID AND FLOOR ... and ... well, what looked like blood smeared on the back of the toilet seat. It was foul. If it was a public toilet I would have complained to the council/manager/whatever.
I didn't want to make a fuss so I (gagging) cleaned the seat as best as I could with toilet paper and held DD over the edge (which was bloody hard as she weighs a ton).
Then DD pipes up (she is 3 BTW), "Mummy, this toilet is really stinky and dirty, I don't like it!"
(I hadn't said a word)
I tried to shush her but she went on and said, "I don't need to be quiet, the baby is not sleeping!"
I murmured noises and got her distracted but I don't know how much my friend heard.
We washed our hands (luckily there WAS soap in the sink) really thoroughly but the rest of the time I felt horrible ...

And the worst thing about it? You couldn't even blame it on her child because she isn't potty trained yet.

I would be absolutely mortified/horrified/want to die if someone saw my toilet in that state.

My toilet isn't ever in that state when I don't have visitors coming round.

YUK ...

So I am trying to guage if I am being anal and silly when checking the state of a toilet when I get visitors and find out whether it is normal to have a toilet like that in your house .......

OP posts:
sparklygothkat · 21/07/2007 13:21

ewww!!!

DirtyGertiefromnumber30 · 21/07/2007 13:32

defo not normal to have a toilet that is worse than a public loo.

No, its not anal to check your toilets before a guest comes round, just polite because you wouldnt want anyone to have to wipe wee etc off the seat before they sat down.

In fact if an impromptu guest called rounf and asked to use the loo i would run up and check it first.

DoubleBluff · 21/07/2007 13:32

Oh that is gross.
I am not the tidiest of people but my toilet would never be in that state regardless.
ANd I would be mortifed if a friend found my toilet in that sate.
I always check toilet before visitors use it.
Say ' Let me just check state of loo before you use it DS might not have flushed it.'

Ceolas · 21/07/2007 13:43

Yuck!

I do as doublebluff with the loo.

If I know someone is coming round I do tidy. Depends on the state of the house as to what extent. I have inconsistent standards!

sparklygothkat · 21/07/2007 13:45

i always clean the loo and give a squint of bleach everyday. Sometimes you might find that dd2 has pebbled dashed the loo but I always clean it.
I am a bit houseproud and hate it when people catch me out...

Think your friend needs some Cilit Bang ghosty...those adds used to make me laugh because I thought no-one would ever have a toilet as dirty as the one in the ad...
seriously, that's grim.

Think I do same as you, different levels, depending on who's coming over. And always check toilet.

GryffindorGHOSTY · 21/07/2007 14:23

phew ...
it was foul ...
She's still nice though ... I think I will just arrange meeting at the zoo from now on ...

JoolsToo · 21/07/2007 14:28

hmmm, oblivious to a bit of dust and untidiness is one thing, even a greasy hob top but a loo? in that state? I can't imagine anyone not dashing up there for a springclean, if not before you arrive, at least when you ask to use it.

Presumably your friend other peoples houses and notices how different their loos are (if they are! )

Am ed (and horrified)

JoolsToo · 21/07/2007 14:29

if she offers you a sandwich my advice is turn it down!

SSSandy2 · 21/07/2007 14:33

You know it maybe just hasn't occurred to the woman she could clean the loo more often. Maybe when she comes to your place next time, you could give her a wink.
i.e.
Oh come in, look I've put the kettle on, would you mind making us some tea? I haven't got round to cleaning the loo yet TODAY, so I'll just whip upstairs and do that.

Spidermama · 21/07/2007 14:39

Popsy mine's a bombsite too. I like advance notice and when people pop round unannounced, which happens all too regularly, I'm utterly mortified.

They always say placating yet patronising things like, 'Wow! I love your house. It's so, erm, lived in.'

Spidermama · 21/07/2007 14:45

Griffin I encountered a very similar situation at a friend's. There was menstrual blood, poo and wee all over the place. Could it be the same person I wonder?

I didn't bother cleaning it up. Yuk! But then only I had to use the loo (my baby was in a nappy) so I hovered over and tried not to think about it.

lilolilmanchester · 21/07/2007 15:35

I have two anally tidy friends. They both came round last week for supper and I spent AGES making sure downstairs was as clean and tidy as it's ever been. Totally ignored upstairs, which was the worst it's ever been. One of my friends went up to see my DD and was horrified!!!!
