Tumble dryers - cheap or expensive

My tumble dryer is coming to the end of its life - the electrics keep cutting out, and cheif suspect is that the motherboard is starting to malfunction. It's 7 years old, is a Bosch, and cost over £700 new.

So, seeing as buying a more expensive machine doesn't seem to have given me particular longevity, should I just give up on Bosch and the like and go for Beko/Zanussi et al?

I've always bought higher-end brands, and have pretty much always defaulted to Bosch, but am I just being a mug? I'm not willing to pay Miele prices either - that's another tier above!!

What I'd quite like is the American style tumble dryers that dry a full load in 20 mins, but they're expensive, huge, and require hard wiring apparently (but if anyone knows differently, please do let me know!!).

And tumble dryers - do I need to go for one of these heat-pump ones? No venting, so will definitely need to be a condenser. I'm worried they'll take even longer to get things dry...

I know what you me we bought ours 5 years ago and it was repaired under hot point cause it was one of those that was catching fire and all was fine. But after a year something was wrong and we had it repaired under the warranty. Last week it stopped drying properly so popped into curry’s and I couldn’t find the same one but the one similar to it was £650 and I thought I should just buy the cheap one which was £199.00 but after thinking through and we are the family of 6 I ended up get one a bit more money and hope it will last longer.

I got AEG condensed

Cecilia2016 · 17/05/2019 21:30

So far so good. It delivered on Tuesday

I had to buy one recently as my old hotpoint died. The old one wasn’t fancy with a load of buttons etc but did the job well.

The new one I’ve bought can be controlled off your phone (but why would you want to?!) and has way too many settings which I find confusing. I wish I’d gone for a cheaper model.

I’d go cheaper end. I have a Beko and while not as effective as my sisters in the US it does the job.

My beko has lasted 5 years and is still going strong. I really rate it.

I have a Bosch condenser dryer. I bought it in 2009 according to some old paperwork I was sorting through a few months ago, which surprised me as I hadn't realised it was that long ago.

So it is ten years old and still going strong. It was about £350.

I think John Lewis have info on types of tumble dryers. The heat pump ones are not suitable for a garage or outhouse. The ordinary condenser dryers can be plumbed in, or you can just empty the tank with every use, which is what I do. I only looked at models with tanks at the top (some had them at the bottom).
I have a cheapo Beko, recommended by a friend. Two years in, so far so good.

I have a Beko condenser and it’s absolotley brilliant! Coming up to 3 years and never had a problem with it

Oliack1417 · 17/05/2019 21:53

I have a Miele and it's amazing - it was in my house when we moved in though along with a Miele washer, so we didn't buy it. Are they v expensive?

Teddyreddy · 17/05/2019 21:58

We have an inherited cheap one and the cool setting isn't very good (it's too hot) - it has a tendency to shrink stuff. I wouldn't not buy cheap but I'd definitely check reviews first.

AEG heat pump condenser, plumbed in so no drawers to empty. Does the job and 9 kg capacity. If you get a heat pump one you must remember to clean all of the filters to ensure it works efficiently. I like the light in the drum!

We have a Zanussi condenser. Cost about £280 from John Lewis, still going strong after 7 years.
(it'll prob break down now I've said that 😂)
