How can we get rid of them?
They appeared last night.
DD noticed one on her arm as she was chilling on her bed before going to sleep and then looked up to see a very fine web with about 20/30 other tiny reddish things in the web. The web appeared to go across the whole of the width of the large window.
We hoovered it all up and she slept else were, rather freaked by the whole thing.
This morning, I’ve found more!

What are they and how the hell can we get rid of them?

I found one hanging and making its web as it worked its way down but I can’t for the life of me work out where it originated from.

TIA

They are clover mites, generally referred to as spider mites - they make a nice "blood" red stain when squished. They're a true mite as opposed to an insect (unlike spiders of course).

Good news - they cannot bite and they're completely harmless to humans, pets and building structures/furniture.

Bad news - they can be disastrous to plants.

They're actually really common, they also come in a LOT of numbers - you're most likely to see them outside on your brick and concrete etc.

To try and get rid, you can try and ensure gaps on windowsills are completely sealed etc, but to be fair they're so tiny they'll get through the smallest of gaps.

You can buy an insecticide from garden centre and the like, think you can also have a professional do it, but to be fair I can't think of anyone ever having this done unless they're really struggling with plant damage I suppose.

Downside of course, whist they pose no threat to humans or pets whatsoever, the same may not be the case for any insecticides used.

Thank you so much for your post.
DD is relieved to know that they won’t harm us. They are still appearing so I have put down some powder.
another night in the spare room for DD.
Do I need to try and find a nest of some sort?
