Plain white crockery

Looking for a simple white set that I can use all the time - don't want another set for best - and that isn't going to go out of stock next year. Haven't found anything I like at M and S, John Lewis or the big supermarkets.

I can't really say what I am looking for in terms of style - except that I will know it when I find it!

Where else would be good to look?

I know you've been to the supermarkets but have you been to Sainsbury's? I always find nice crockery there.

I wanted mid-sized dinner plates, a size between the standard really large plates and the smaller side plates you get in sets. And plain white, simple design. I found hotel ware fitted the bill (Olympia brand in my case) and am now the proud owner of 16 white plates that actually fit well with my existing stuff. Only downside was that I had to buy a box of 16 (I think!) I keep half of them stored out of sight they come out when we have guests etc.

IKEA is your friend!

BlodwynBludd · 11/05/2019 14:09

I got a set in dunelm

LakeFlyPie · 11/05/2019 14:13

I have this set and love the simplicity and durability of it

RubberTreePlant · 11/05/2019 14:14

Look on amazon for "creatable". They do a couple of huge plain white sets.

MikeUniformMike · 11/05/2019 14:24

Mine are from Ikea but I would try Saibsury's or Wilko. I think the Sainsbury's ones are usually good.

ItalianEarthernware · 11/05/2019 14:28

IKEA all the way.

MC68 · 11/05/2019 14:29

IKEA!

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 11/05/2019 14:31

I got mine at TKMaxx.

Same brief and just stumbled on to them. Also Homesense worth a look

James Martin for Denby

Traditional Denby

We had some cheaper Sainsbury stuff, but found that it chipped very easily.

MEgirl · 11/05/2019 14:38

Corelle. Very light weight, strong and shatter proof glass.

Dancingdreamer · 11/05/2019 14:45

LakeFlyPie - I was going to suggest exactly the same Denby set. I love it.

beanaseireann · 11/05/2019 15:11

Try dunnesstores.com
They do a range called Simply White.
They also do a lovely light cream set.

Mumthedogsbeensick · 11/05/2019 15:15

I got mine from Matalan and it's great. I bought some serving dishes and a gravy boat too and four years on it's all still going strong.

WellTidy · 11/05/2019 15:20

I know you said you looked in m and s, but did you see the maxim range there (not the stoneware, but the porcelain)? I have it and it is great. They’ve stocked it for a good few years and you can either buy as a set or individual items. They don’t mark and are really robust. I am very pleased with ours. Large range of sizes and items too.

CottonDuvet · 11/05/2019 16:21

Thanks for all those suggestions. Off to Ikea and Sainsbury's again and to find someone who sticks the Denby so I can see it (looks like just the thing)

I have Sainsbury white round plates, side plates , pasta bowls and deep cereal bowls.
Then some from The Range - large oval plates (steak plates) and shallow bowls . They are more translucent but still white.

M&S ones drove me barmy , they got grey lines from cutlery which I had to clean with Astonish

Bubblysqueak · 11/05/2019 16:42

IKEA do some great white sets.

FrogFairy · 11/05/2019 16:43

Another vote for Correlle, they do many different pieces in plain white. I love how light they are and they stack very neatly.

ikea 365. I did buy some sets from House of Fraser but the actual china was very poor quality and not made in the UK.

FrogFairy · 11/05/2019 16:49

I forgot to say, my Correlle collection comprises of some vintage items from the 70s/80s and some bought new nine years ago. No grey marks or chips and in all that time I have only broken about 5 things due to extreme carelessness on my part.

viques · 11/05/2019 16:56

Mine is plain White Wedgwood bone china, no pattern or design at all. All bought in sales , usually as seconds though you wouldn't notice, or from outlets like TKMAxx. Had it for years, use it every day . I also have side plates and bowls, again bought in sales and outlets. I think bone china lasts better than thicker China, less likely to chip I find.

WellTidy · 11/05/2019 17:29

Porcelain or glass based dinner ware shouldn’t give you grey marks. Stoneware might.

spongedog · 11/05/2019 18:08

Pottery will chip or cheap porcelain. Good quality bone china or good quality porcelain should take a lot of use before showing age.
