2 singles or 1 double day bed for spare room?

We have a spare room that is used an office but will also be a guest room.

I'd like a trundle/sofa/day bed which doesn't take up too much room but looks attractive when not in use.

However I'm not sure if I should go for a standard single that converts to a double or a bed that can be a single/2 singles/double and I want it to look like a sofa of sorts when not in use.

What would be more practical/attractive/space-saving? Any recommendations? I don't want to spend more than £350.

Ikea have Utaker which are stacking single beds that can be used as 1 or 2 singles or a double but is not that attractive when stacked. I suppose I could paint them Hmm

or Fyresdal which is a (IMO) quite attractive single day bed but can only convert to a double.

All advice appreciated!

I much prefer the Utaker personally. I think the wood looks much nicer than the black metal, but I suppose it depends on the rest of your decor. It think the Utaker could be easily adapted to what you'd like with paint/cushions/throws etc

It also seems a lot more versatile.

It depends who's likely to be sleeping in your spare room though? Do you need two singles? Most of our overnight guests are teens either on a sleepover or a stream of foreign exchange students so for us the two singles would be a massive benefit. If you only have couples staying then you don't necessarily need the versatility of two singles.

When the Fyresdal is a double it’s not really very useable as one since one person gets in and then is stuck behind the other person. I would hate that. The Utaker is much more useable as both a double and singles.

NuffSaid - I think you may be right. I'll pay them though.

Yotam - but if the in-laws don't like it they might leave earlier Wink

DoNot - that's lovely but I think the Ikea ones are a lot narrower so take up less room

The Utaker looks fine, you could put throw and some cushions on it when it's not being used and paint it to match the walls if you want it to blend in.

I would go for something like the wooden Ikea one. It looks nice (or would with nice white bedding and some pillows/cushions/a quilt dressing it) and can be used as two singles or a double.

I'd check whether it actually makes a double with no gap in between the mattresses (and surely it'd be much bigger than a double? Two standard singles together would make a 6'/superking wide bed when together; if they're small singles then two together would make a 5'/king size when together, though presumably normal length not 6' like a standard king/superking?) Make sure you can get bedding to make it as one big bed if you're going to want to.

Otherwise, I'd avoid trundle beds unless the trundle has legs to lift it up to bed. If you have adult guests it feels really odd to put on in a full height bed and one on a floor bed!

We just exactly same scenario and have bought lock and zip beds
Can two singles but zip together to form a fantastic super king sized bed I think they were about £€500 each

I would go for the stacking singles, trundle beds always feel a bit wobbly as the legs aren't very sturdy. We had one which was my son's bed and the trundle allowed sleep overs.

The Utkater from Ikea looks great. Good wooden frame. Sturdy.

Easily made into a day bed with some cushions and a throw.

Utaker it is! I'll paint it a dark grey and I'll just get 2 sets of single bedding.

TBH I'm not too concerned with the beds fitting seamlessly together - if people want luxury they can stay in a hotel! Grin

Get some really nice funky cushions and it'll look great, even if it's not as day-beddy as you'd like.
