I am trying to get a cleaning routine organised and wondered (without being over whelmed with products and implements) what would your recommendations be for a basic cleaning kit for each type of room?

Zoflora-it can be used neat it diluted in a spray bottle and the pink stuff for things like stained mugs/draining board/bath etc microfibre cloths

Dishwashing liquid diluted in a spray bottle.

Elbow grease !! It’s really good for cleaning and getting stuff done!!

Whiskyagogo · 06/05/2019 11:13

In my cleaning caddy I have:

-Mr sheen multi surface spray
-Glass cleaner
-Bathroom cleaner
-Toilet cleaner
-Anti bacterial spray (which only gets used on toilet)
-Floor cleaner
-Cream cleaner (for kitchen sink)
-Kitchen cleaner

That's it. For my whole house.

In the cupboard I keep:

-upholstery cleaner (in case of stains on the sofa or carpets)
-brillo pads (for the oven)

I find zoflora unnecessary. Remember, it is a disinfectant and not an air freshener or a cleaner.

In terms of routine, I follow TOMM which I find helps me keep on top of everything without going overboard.

Eco-friendly all the way or natural products. The amount of chemicals Mrs Hinch uses is appalling and no one should be trying to replicate that. Unless they’re stupid.

Polish
Bottle of flash all purpose diluted into a spray (then you can also chick a splash in mop bucket)
Cloths
Bleach for toilet and occasional sink clear
Vacuum
Long handled duster for ceiling cobwebs and tops of doors
Window cleaning spray / white vinegar spray.

firstimemamma · 06/05/2019 14:18

The main things I use:

Zoflora (diluted - kitchen surfaces, floors. Neat - plug holes occasionally, bins, toilet brush)

Method spray (kitchen and dusting)

Bleach (toilet sometimes, plugs and sinks sometimes)

Toilet duck

Flash bathroom (also used for cleaning washing machine!)

Cif cream cleaners (sinks and bath / shower)

These are the main things. Sometimes I use lemon and bicarbonate for the sinks and sometimes I clean the microwave by microwaving a lemon in a cup of hot water than wiping the inside of the microwave with a damp cloth. Sometimes I use carpet 1001.

I don't use anti bac wipes at all, only microfibre cloths and it's saved me a fortune!

I am very similar to @Whiskyagogo in that I follow the organised mum method (despite DH doing half and not being a Mum).

For the whole house I have:

  • washing up liquid
  • a kitchen spray and a bathroom spray. I only have two because its easier to have the bathroom one in situ IMO.
  • floor cleaner
  • glass cleaner
  • wood polish which I use on antique furniture sporadically, certainly not every week
  • oven cleaner which get used every few months
  • bicarbonate of soda for really grimy bits

I open windows, do most dusting with a long handled fluffy duster and just wipe skirting boards with a damp cloth.

I use splosh cleaning stuff because I like the cut back on plastic and it isn't tested on animals and I am essentially a lazy person who literally cannot be arsed making my own.

Whiskyagogo · 07/05/2019 11:46

@limesoda I use Splosh too! I find most of the products very reasonably priced, and they work well too.

I saw Mrs Hinch for the first time at the weekend (have been living under a rock) and was horrified at the quantity of cleaning products she was plugging. There was a YouTube video of what she recommends and it seemed to be multiple different products to basically do the same job.

It did make me wonder how many people actually use all the products or whether people initially get everything and then whittle it down to a handful. Who has the time to be constantly switching between different cleaning products?

All of those artificial scents and chemicals can't be good for you or the planet. There didn't seem to be any warnings about not mixing chemicals which must be a constant issue if you are using multiple things to clean a room with.

fromtheshires · 08/05/2019 14:59

My basic cleaning kit consists of the following;

White vinegar
Microfibre cloths - different colours for kitchen, bathroom, general etc
Harpic limescale remover for the toilets
Toothbrush for hard to reach areas
Birarbinate of soda
Washing up liquid

I prefer to use the natural methods of cleaning where I can only using chemicals where I have to. Just look at the list of chemicals and warnings on the sides of the products mrs hunch advertises. A lot are very dangerous when mixed together or very harmful if they enter the water channels.

TheTreeHearsYourSecret · 08/05/2019 17:07

I cannot stand the Mrs Hinch fill your house with a shit load of chemical smells and disposable wipes.

I use microfibre cloths & car detailing towels (just for the size) which are great for drying the sink/toilet etc in the bathroom

Diluted zoflora
Glass cleaner
Method multi-surface
Toilet cleaner
E-cloths

That is it. Anything more kicks my asthma off.

I cannot recommend enough The Organised Mum Method with Gemma. Easy 30 minutes - do not do more than that, the whole point is that by the time you come back round to it a week later it is cleaner and you get faster. I have been doing it for ages. Love it.
