As a basic intro, I had a shit childhood of the sort where you didn't know if you'd get fed and were frequently left alone. But as a nice middle class family no one intervened.

I moved out at 16 to a bedsit and tried to make a life for myself. I'm 37 now and a professional, to my credit.

However I find myself lacking in basic life skills for obvious reasons.

My question to mumsnetters is how do you manage your house?

I'll give you an idea of what I currently do;

  • hoover weekly
  • change bed weekly
  • clean down kitchen stuff nightly Inc washing up
  • try and clean bathroom weekly
  • bleach the loo daily
  • clean the fridge/freezer monthly
  • I try and put things back and maintain some organisation

So... if I'm quite filthy mare, let me know but also tell me what I need to be doing to keep my house in a decent standard please!

I think that all sounds totally normal!

GlitterUnixorn · 27/04/2019 18:16

I need a routine never mind mind telling someone else what they need to do! What u do sounds good, if ur house is clean then there's no problem! If it works for u, then it works for u! I can't get nothing done when I plan to do it! I do one thing but there's always other things I never complete Your routine sounds clear and organised!

Aimily · 27/04/2019 18:17

That list is all perfectly normal to me, I don't think you've anything to worry about.

Usuallyinthemiddle · 27/04/2019 18:18

Sounds like you're nailing it, to be honest!

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 27/04/2019 18:19

That's more than I do. You're fine.
I probably only dust and hoover our living room once a fortnight, and I still think it looks okay.

Knitclubchatter · 27/04/2019 18:28

i'd even go as far as to say bleaching the loo daily is overkill.
twice a year (where i live)windows inside and out, including curtains.
twice a year baseboards and the bottom half of the walls.
dusting needs to be done based on where you live weekly at least especially the tops of picture framed door frames window frames and then nick nacks (vases etc on display).
then there is the less noticeable stuff that piles up, magazines and books.
last but not least clothing that is no longer suitable.

mommybear1 · 27/04/2019 20:53

I think you're definitely covering the basics OP Grinthe only thing I'd add is view your home as a visitor (hard but not impossible!) what do you look at therefore what needs cleaning (usually a good dust I swear by my long reach feather ostrich duster Wink) . I'd also add in things like a dishwasher and washing machine clean once a month and windows/window sill/skirting board wipe.

redcaryellowcar · 27/04/2019 22:04

I think your regular maintenance sounds spot on, similar to what we do here. I sporadically have a blitz on abandoned cobwebs (I let spiders stay, and won't vacuum up any current homes!) a will waft around with a bottle of cream cleaner to do marks on skirting and door frames if we have someone new/ important visiting. I clean out the fridge around once a fortnight (or when Large supermarket delivery due)

The Organised Mum Method has been a game changer for me. I learnt very little about how to keep a house from my parents and TOMM has got me on track. It only takes 30 minutes per day.

Stuckforthefourthtime · 27/04/2019 22:08

Have you looked at The Organised Mum Method? It's amazing and time saving and really really good.

Don't get sucked into weird housework obsessives / insta-sellers like Mrs Hinch, they are not representative. But TOMM is the business, she saved me from a very similar rut to yours, with limited domestic skills and many small sticky children Smile

Aquamarine1029 · 27/04/2019 22:11

I think you sound like you're doing a great job! I Hoover every bloody day but that's only because I have cats and have to.

DramaAlpaca · 27/04/2019 22:12

What you do sounds just fine to me. It's more than I do.

Adultchild · 29/04/2019 10:13

Thank you all so much for your posts.

Part of the reason I mention it is because I do airbnb with my spare room and I've had a few negative reviews for cleanliness. It made me wonder what I was doing wrong.
Yesterday I polished skirting boards and ciffed the bath. Maybe it's the little things I don't see so am trying to look thru guests eyes.
Will defo look up mum's method, thank you!
