Does anyone have their hob in an island or peninsula unit?

I am thinking of putting our new hob in a peninsula unit when we re-do the kitchen, it would kind of be in the middle of the kitchen/dining room. If the hob is installed on a worktop, do you think I'd get lots of spattering from it, as there won't be any walls or splashbacks around it?

Also opinions please - do you need an cooker hood directly over the hob, or would an extractor fan on the wall a couple of feet away be enough? It extracts to outside, so is very efficient.

Any thoughts appreciated!

my friend has it and has quite a large margin round the actual hob bit and no problem with splatters etc.

She does have extractor over it though. Might be okay on the wal if it is a big room.

WHAT is a peninsula unit? I can't keep up with all this. Is it the same as an island, no surely not, it must be a isthmus type thing that juts out the end of the kitchen?

BBBBasilisk · 13/07/2007 23:40

peninsula - jpined on one end sticking out kind of thing - like - well a peninsula I guess.

ahundredtimeturners · 13/07/2007 23:43

But why is it any different to the rest of the units? I don't know why I care about this, but I do.

I know, it's a new modern way of saying breakfast bar, isn't it? Go on admit it. Is like what they used to have in Neighbours right?

Anyway I have seen hobs on island units if that helps.

I have hob on peninsula. I will now say to friends "please admire my peninsula hob".

It does not splatter more but kids will stand other side of said peninsula and gt splatted in face if not careful. I have a narrow peninsula.

We have no extractor. Is okay, but I do not fry much.

Thank you for all your comments - very useful. I think I should have plenty of space on each side for putting things down, as the hob will be in the middle of a run of worktop with nothing on each side, but I will think about a splashback or upstand to stop kids getting splashed (eek).

100TT I always imagine you can get your knees under a breakfast bar, but this will just be cabinets, so I think it qualifies as a peninsula (sounds very posh too!)

thank you all

Yes, get an upstand or it can be alarming. Mine loom very close without thinking sometimes.
