Water softener

Oh my gosh.... having lived in London and South East for my entire life I was just used to our water and didn't know any different but having had a new bathroom installed about 2 years ago I was getting increasingly frustrated with trying to remove limescale build up.

We had a lovely and very good cleaner who decided to go back to the workplace rather than be self-employed longer, primarily due to chasing people for money ... she used to do deep cleans every week and was keeping it under control but although we keep the house as clean as possible, I just cannot work my magic like she does!

After me moaning continuously my DH has had a water softener installed.... IS THIS HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVE? Those of you with soft water in your area, you don't know how lucky you are Grin..... when I have a bath the bubble bath makes the water feel silky, my hair feels great, my skin is getting better and it's only been two weeks.... not to mention my bathroom looks cleaner for days longer.... I actually cannot believe how different it is.

There is no real point to my post other than to boast I now have glossy hair and a shiny bathroom for longer.... if you live in a hardwater area definitely consider one. It's expensive initially but I do not need to use as much soap, hair products or cleaning products because they all lather up beautifully.... it's how they look in the actual adverts when they only use a pea sized amount and get lots of bubbles Grin

And which of the two major companies roducts did you install

Geillis · 08/04/2019 08:56

There are literally hundreds on the market. My sister just installed a small combiphos which attaches to the pipes, it was only £150 plus plumbers labour, it's changed her life already! 😁

Palaver I anticipated comments like yours. Because I would probably be skeptical myself, hence why I gave no names as it's irrelevant in my post.... I used a local company.

But believe it or not, this is a genuine post and I am a real consumer who is just excited about their nee water softener Grin

@Geillis that's an amazing price, I am sure ours was around £6-800 but we got 5 massive bags of free salt as our neighbours had a refer a friend voucher so that should last us quite a while.

We did have the drinking water tap added though so that isn't softened but just filtered as apparently the softened water can be bad for kids and pets to drink.

I'm honestly so impressed by it though, I genuinely did not know water was like this elsewhere in the county and that I have unnecessarily had to put up with what we hd before for years!

Even the smal local ones are charging over 1000.
When I had a water filtered installed I paid 500 for the unit that was about 10 years ago.It was a small family business. They also installed water softeners but due to a bereavement the company was sold to some of the employees.who in turn decided it was more profitable to install filters only .They still maintain my unit.
I’m a bit put out of that a small local businesses are able to quote 1650 for unit and some plumbing work ,only advantage will be any issues they will attend apart from that I am not feeling them at all.
It’s more of a necessity for my ASD daughter who has skin conditions as well. I’m hoping this helps

@Palaver1 my husband thinks his skin is definitely getting better, no diagnosed ezcema or anything but it does look like it and has been sore recently. Do you know anyone with one that could refer you and maybe get a discount that way? I live in the South East and mine was nowhere near what you have been quoted.

Actually I put My Dh off having one for a long time as I too, was very sceptical and it was over 1K. I thought it would be a waste of money. I love it now though, and am so pleased we did it. I would not hesitate to have another installed if we ever moved although tbh I think we can take it with us. We also have the hard drinking water tap.

The cleaning is much easier, the only hard water marks are round the hard water tap now, and it even reversed the hard water marks that I hadn't been able to clean, within a few weeks of being installed.

I love my softener.

No i dont but i can assure you its got to be done im in between a divorce and every penny counts its not a decision that I have made lightly

I live in one of the softest water areas of the country and always have, I couldn't imagine not having it. I couldn't live in the south of the country for this very reason.

Apparently has it downsides though, most people swear soft water is not as "tasty" and the extra minerals in harder water are good for teeth and bones apparently.

But I NEVER get limescale - ever, no descaling anything, makes me laugh we have Calgon round here - it just isn't needed. Soaps, shampoos and detergents last forever and yes skin and hair always lovely and silky.

PickleFish · 11/04/2019 21:22

I keep getting leaflets in the post for softeners that just go under the kitchen sink - don't seem to use salt, not sure what they do exactly! Ii presume that they are a bit of a con, and that you have to have the expensively installed ones that use salt to make a real difference?

I'm in a small flat, and not sure I'd get permission for any big changes (nor that I'd have room for anything large)

But my hairdresser has softened water, and it makes my hair look much better!
