Yuck! How to get rid of cat fleas (pref eco friendly)

Our cats seem to have a flea problem at the mo and there are lots of the little buggers around the house.
DS2 is only 8 weeks so I'm not at all keen on using the flea killer house spray we were given by the vet last time we had a problem with this.
Can anyone suggest other ways which are not harmful to a small baby?
They are driving me and DH mad!
TIA

I used to use the drops on the back of the neck. They worked, as did feeding them massive quantities of garlic chicken.

Tigivan I think the drops were - you have to get them from the vet, Advantage works the same.

sorry but you have to treat the house and the pet. the flea has a life cycle of about 9 months and if you dont treat the house they will lie in wait until your cats drops wear off and then they'll pounce.

We have Frontlined both cats and do so regularly (the stuff you put on their necks) and we have some flea zapping spray for the house but its like spraying insecticide inside the house which am not keen on with an 8 week old.
Was hoping there was a more natural way, but perhaps not...

You can get cat flea collars impregnated with something like tea tree oil so maybe that would work to get rid of them out of the house?

We frontline, but still come home from hols to a house full of fleas .
IME only way to kill them is with flea bombs. Buy them from pet shops etc. One per room. Close all windows etc. Light the end, leave the room, close the door - go out for the day if you are worried about baby - come back, open windows etc and hoover.

Is unlikely to be eco-friendly. But is effective.

pannacotta - i treated the house when 8.5 months pregnant and then again when 2 weeks old. Do downstairs just before bed and all go upstairs. And then do upstairs first thing and then all go out for the day.

You really have to spray everywhere or they wont go.

I hate chemicals, but we do use frontline drops on the cat. If you do this regularly, the house should be okay too.
Last time we were at the vets, I argued with them about the safety of house sprays. I think they thought I was just a loony in a rainbow striped cardigan, but so what? I'm a loony with healthy kids.
Apparently neem oil is very good, but I'm not sure what you do with it.

I used tigivan or whatever it's called for three years ten years ago and the cats haven't had fleas since - no idea why though - hopefully it hasn't mutated their DNA so they are now supercats (although they are supersmelly).

Pannacotta · 12/07/2007 21:05

WHat is Tigivan? I havent heard of that before... Sounds effective

Tiguvan - is by Bayer. I'm not sure it's still available though. Advantage has the same stuff in it.
