number 1

or

number 2

or

number 1 but in cream

Would be having wood worktops and matching flooring I think?

Thoughts would be much appreciated!

The price Im referring to wasnt from howdens was from this friend of DHs who makes his own but the styles Im choosing on are those two from howdens

OH Cappucino - please tell me more!! Does it look lovely? Which worktops/floor/tiles do you have ?

I saw that pecka joiners are the way to go apparently, bespoke don't you know
No heard of howdens before though.

moondog · 11/07/2007 09:55

1
Will date less quickly than 2 as well.

Cappuccino · 11/07/2007 09:56

pecka I love it

I have it with laminate wood-effect worktops (wanted wood but were doing massive refit of whole house and roof went wrong so budget went down). Dh is a bit obsessive about wood, he would like to replace at some point but it doesn't look half bad even with the laminate

firstly we chose a really dark one but at the last minute (really, it was all on the palettes ready to be delivered) I realised it was a massive mistake because it would have been very gloomy

we have white/grey flooring and the room is really light and bright

with regards cleaning, I go round once a week with 2 microfibre cloths, one damp, one dry, and rub with the damp one and polish off with the dry one. Takes, honestly, 5 mins I know because I flylady it with my timer. I often do forget to do it every week but the fingermarks still not a problem

Cappuccino · 11/07/2007 09:56

sod off moondog my kitchen is bleeding timeless

moondog · 11/07/2007 09:57

I've ballsed up with a dark kitchen in the past. Dark blue with slate tops and floors in a basement fgs.

Plunged me into a major depression for bloody years.

HedTwigg · 11/07/2007 10:00

number 1 .. wouldn't have matching wood tops and flooring though

think the high-shine gloss is a fashion statement and not as timeless as the shaker style

Cappuccino · 11/07/2007 10:00

oh for pity's sake

shaker crap

you have to clean all the little grooves

stealthsquiggle · 11/07/2007 10:02

Number 1 - but not wood worktops if you could possibly afford granite.

And gets LOTS of the drawers - they are fab - no more rummaging at the back of cupboards!

moondog · 11/07/2007 10:02

Shaker crap??

Well...you may have to clean a lot if you are a clumsy slattern, yes.....

But I'm not.

Cappuccino · 11/07/2007 10:06

pah am not clumsy slattern

am just getting pissed off with people slating my kitchen

also I do think Shaker as much of a fashion statement as anything else

moondog · 11/07/2007 10:09

I like them both actually but like 1 a teensy bit more.

Cappuccino · 11/07/2007 10:12

thing is with the high gloss kitchens they flash them all up in the brochures to make them look the next big thing

but when you get them in your house they aren't all fashion statementy with the gaggia coffee maker and the nonce they are just really light-reflective and spacious

only smug high fashion retro if you get a smeg fridge imo

muppethasakitten · 11/07/2007 10:16

We have high gloss cream kitchen - have to say we don't get a problem with finger marks from kids at all...

... and it's really easy to give the doors a quick wipe over...

...I would also investigate sourcing worktops online - granite and wood can be up to half the price from internet suppliers...

... good one for wood is Norfolk Oak...

bundle · 11/07/2007 10:17

why cream? surely anything white (like erm white goods) might look a little odd with it?

muppethasakitten · 11/07/2007 10:20

true bundle... we got a good deal on integrated stuff though so i suppose it wasn't an issue...

bundle · 11/07/2007 10:21

ok.

Pollyanna · 11/07/2007 10:27

We have something similar to no 1. We have wooden worktops and painted cupboards. In our case we have gone for a pale green.

I decided against a high gloss kitchen as I thought it would date more. I thought a wooden one was more timeless and could also be revamped pretty easily by re-painting it. We have paint on it that is easily wipeable. I decided against cream or white as I thought it would show up too many marks. We also have a wooden floor and it looks really nice! (it is new so I haven't found any downsides to it yet )

KTeePee · 11/07/2007 10:46

I have similar to No 1 in cream with wooden worktops - yes the shaker style means the bottom groove gets a bit dusty but it really is no bother to give it a quick wipe over. Cleans really easily with a damp cloth.

Howdens have a good repution imo - same range as MFI have. I got mine from Ikea though, which I doubt can be beaten on price if that's an issue for you.

cameleon · 11/07/2007 10:56

we have got number 2 in cream from howdens but with these handles. Black granite with silver flecks and black slate floor tiles.
It looks fanastic, always gets a "wow" when people walk in!

duckduckgoose · 11/07/2007 11:07

I have number 2 in white and love it. My kitchen is quite dark and the glossy units make the room much brighter.

No more problems with fingerprints on the doors than with the wood units we had before.

granarybeck · 15/07/2007 18:56

Pecka, how do you do the whole Howdens thing? We are just starting on finding/choosing new kitchen and have seen other people recommend Howdens.

Can you contact them directly or do you need to find local fitter first who will do it for you as they are trade? Do you know how prices compare to other wholesale place like mfi, bq, etc?

granarybeck · 15/07/2007 20:53

Anyone else know??

KTWhoMustNotBeNamed · 16/07/2007 16:26

If you phone up your local Howdens they will post you out a catalogue but to actually buy from their you would need to go with your builder/kitchen fitter as they are trade only afaik

Apparently they are owned by MFI so have much the same range. I think it is worth checking the prices versus MFI because when MFI have a sale on they can be cheaper....

(I think you live near me btw and our local Howdens is near the Royal Mail place off Ashley Road)

BonyM · 16/07/2007 16:30

Number 1 in cream.
