How do you wash and dry your curtains?

So my curtains are about 9f long, I have stuck them in the washing machine but I'm wondering how to dry them?

I know they can't go in the tumble dryer, they are too big to hang on the heaters and I don't have a line! Would you just hang them up again to let them dry? If not I think they will just get really wrinkled Confused

I hate jobs like this! Help Smile

Do you have a dehumidifier or portable heater? I would maybe hang them back up but closed with either the heater and/or dehumidifier on.
If not maybe help them closed so they dry with the windows open!
I would imagine you need to ensure they dry properly where the slider things go/ Where it gathers?

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 15/03/2019 18:55

You'll need to dry them properly, especially along the heading tape or they will get mildew. Try folding them in half and draping them over a clothes airer near a heater or radiator and move and refold them till all sections are dry. You could also hang them over a shower rail in a warm bathroom if they aren't too heavy.

Usually only do them in summer so I can hang on the line. [minger]

Could you try throwing them over the bannister? I do that with duvet covers.

Since we had our curtains made (6yrs ago) I've never washed them! I'm to scared I'll mess them up... How do you know what to wash them on? Do I need to iron them?

Rayna37 · 15/03/2019 19:22

Hang them up. This had never occurred to me as an option but the colleague who suggested it to me had much higher domestic standards than me and years of tips and tricks and as usual, spot on advice.

theconstantinoplegardener · 15/03/2019 19:46

When I washed our bedroom curtains, the drapes shrunk but the lining didn't, so we had an uneven margin of liner sticking out at the bottom. I haven't dared wash any curtains since.

PotteringAlong · 15/03/2019 19:46

People wash their curtains?!

Lordamighty · 15/03/2019 19:55

Heavier more expensive curtains are not supposed to washed. They usually have a finish on them which isn’t meant to washed off. Some fabrics also have a high shrinkage value, it’s better not to risk it. Vacuum or dry clean only.

barkinatthemoon · 15/03/2019 20:01

my living room curtains are over 14ft long (double height ceiling)... they won't ever see the washing machine, and I doubt we'll ever be able to afford to replace them with new ones 🤣
Honestly I think I've only ever washed a pair of curtains once, because the dog pee'd up them as a puppy. I occasionally spray them with febreeze or diluted zoflora, but really, how are they getting dirty enough to need a machine wash? They arent a soft furnishing that gets used as such, like a sofa, cushion, rug. I'd Hoover the normal length ones if they got dusty etc, but I really didn't know curtain washing was a thing people do!

Whitney168 · 15/03/2019 20:03

If they are heavy big curtains and you hang them up to dry, you need to make sure your curtain poles/tracks can take their weight when wet!

Amore22 · 16/03/2019 07:03

Like others have said, I do them in the summer when needed, not every year and hang back up to dry. Otherwise, brush/Hoover them gently, spray with an essential oil mixed with water now and again, depending on fabric.

TapasForTwo · 16/03/2019 07:08

I washed all my curtains last summer so I could line dry them in the gorgeous sunshine.

I rarely wash curtains as I don't think they need washing that often. No-one smokes in our house, and I don't have curtains in the kitchen or bathroom.

FamilyOfAliens · 16/03/2019 07:11

I get mine dry-cleaned.

It’s expensive but I only do it once a year so it works out less than £1 a week.

JeezYouLoon · 16/03/2019 07:12

I always wash our curtains on a warm summers day, then just hang them back up, close them and they dry there. That seemed the most sensible plan to me.

BlackCatSleeping · 16/03/2019 07:12

I just wash them in the machine and hang them back up wet. My kids are young and I often end up with chocolate finger marks on the curtains.

Bigonesmallone3 · 16/03/2019 07:12

I have never washed curtains!
Why would u?

JuniorAsparagus · 16/03/2019 07:15

You can wash curtains? I usually get mine dry cleaned (but not very often).

JosephineHass · 16/03/2019 07:23

I always hang them back up wet and it's just fine, they dry pretty quickly and no wrinkles at all.

FriendOrFaux · 16/03/2019 07:34

Our front room curtains have been up for 4 years and have never been washed, I hoover them (not often) and squirt them with febreze every so often. They're about 10ft drop, lined, weigh a ton and I don't think they're meant to be washed anyway.

Bedroom curtains in dc's rooms were from Laura Ashley, said dry clean only so I put them on a gentle wash and dried them outside, ironed and put back up, they were fine.
I didn't think curtains really got dirty? We don't have them in the kitchen or bathrooms.

My motto - never make unnecessary work for yourself!

Flowersintheatticconversion · 16/03/2019 11:53

Mine say dry clean only but I’ve washed and then tumble dried in the past and they’ve been fine.
But I only wash them when I’m redecorating! Aka not very often

Flowersintheatticconversion · 16/03/2019 11:53

friends motto is good!
