Any science boffins out there? How do I clean badly tarnished stainless steel?

I managed to boil some plastic things dry which gave off really acrid fumes. As well as our cooker hood now not working at all, the stainless steel casing has gone a streaky brown - the stain is embedded in the brushed steel and won't just wipe off. I've tried: strong kitchen cleaner, bicarb, vinegar, baby oil, turps. Still brown. I need some science to reverse the chemical reaction that's taken place between the surface of the steel and the acrid smoke. I know it's a long shot, but anyone???

I know my dh once burnt rice in a saucepan and the bottom was a mess. I read somewhere about rhubarb being great for this sort of thing. So I got a stick of rhubarb and stewed it for a few hours and left it overnight. It worked wonders.

Another remedy i have tried with things like this is salt and lemon juice.
Have also seen the coke thing.

hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies - sounds like acid might be the way to go then
