How do you organise stuff so your house is tidy?

Bought the hanging organiser recommended on this week's Swears By list and it's got me wondering what other handy storage solutions might help me to organise my very cluttered house. Any other ideas? I'm just about to buy storage caddies for the kitchen cupboards. But I have so much stuff everywhere else! Life admin, kids toys. How do you organise this stuff so your house looks tidy?

I think the best thing is to declutter before you organise. Then you can work out roughly how much storage you need.

I love Ikea for storage furniture. Trofast for toys. Also those stackable boxes with kids and wheels.

Containers for kitchen cupboards - wilko is fab for those.

Thank you, I'm decluttering at the mo. Toys are a particular issue!

Don’t buy any storage until you have properly decluttered. And then gone back and done it again. IKEA trofast and kallax are good for toys.

Definitely get rid of most of your clutter. You should aim to only have things that are used or give you pleasure in your house. This will be an on-going process, as things change over time.

A place for everything and everything in its place. Return things to their home as soon as you finish using them.

Don't put off those small jobs that only take a few minutes.

Get rid of 90% of your stuff.

It’s took me a good six months of repeated clear throughs of each room and I’m still not quite there, but getting down to the bare bones of what you actually can’t live without essentially need makes tidying up a breeze.

I agree with the others. It's like we've all been spending our lives so far accumulating 'Stuff', and it's only been in the past couple of years with Blue Planet and Marie Kondo and Minimalists going viral on Youtube that everyone's started recognising just how big a mistake that was. It's not just about decluttering what you've got, it's about changing your lifestyle to stop it mounting up again. I'm naturally a very disorganised person but I've taken myself in hand the last year or so and improved so much. If you really minamise your belongings it's so much easier to find a place for everything and keep the there when not in use. How old are your kids?

Agree with what's been said, we recently moved and went through everything we owned and reduced it all massively. It's the only way really, we all have too much stuff.

Then if you can identify trouble zones you can figure out a solution, so dc like to have some Lego and toys downstairs but are rubbish at taking it back so we got two ottomans in the dining room with a throw across the middle and it ties in with decor and easy to throw everything in at the end of the day. As a family we were also pants at putting away papers from school/post/appointments etc, so invested in this

Which is on the kitchen wall and labelled post in, to do, to file away, misc and is cleared once a week and calendar and to do list updated as and when.

Its all ongoing though, for lent I'm doing the one thing in a box each day and donating it all at the end. I think we're all constantly finding a balance. The everything has a place is key to having an organised home though!

Have a place for everything. Throw or give away surplus stuff. Use storage boxes in kitchen cupboards. Allow yourself one junk drawer in the kitchen.

If you have an attic I would box up some of the kids toys and every couple of months take out the boxed up toys put away what they were playing with.
By rotating the toys there will be less physical clutter and the kids will have different things to play with.
