Hi, is it possible to find brilliant or a very good hover for around £70?

Yes. A Henry. The best we've ever had. Far better than any Dyson. And very reliable.

janeite · 07/07/2007 20:32

Yes get a Henry. They live for years.

fedda · 07/07/2007 20:37

Which particular one, please?

It's confusing as some people highly paraise Henry and some write that it's a waste of money and they wish they could have their money back as it's really a heavy hoover. what is your experience and what model have you got? Ta

The cheapest is fine.
We got the anti allergy one but its a bit more expensive. £95 I think.

EscapeFrom · 07/07/2007 20:45

henry is crap.

ThomasTankEngine · 07/07/2007 20:50

No he's not!

Can you stretch to £100? If so try this one (this is from Which?) :

Miele S380

BEST BUY
This is Miele's self-declared most basic cylinder vac but, with fantastic cleaning results across the board, it has all the brand's classic hallmarks.

With its bright 'corn yellow' colouring, the Miele S380 is certainly less subtly shaded and lacks the stylish revamped look of its brandmates, but that shouldn't detract from the fact that it gives excellent results on laminate and wooden floors and doesn't disappoint on carpet, either.

It continues to impress in most other areas. It's good at picking up pet hair and retaining allergens, making it a great choice for cat or dog owners. The only disappointment with this vac is that it isn't particularly easy to manoeuvre.

But, that aside, it's easy to use, even on stairs, and emptying it is very quick, simple and hygienic. You needn't worry about it breaking down, either. Our annual survey shows that Miele cleaners have above average reliability. It weighs 7.5kg and has an 8.6 metre power cable.

Pros: Excellent on laminate and floorboards, good on carpet, good at picking up pet hair and retaining allergens, very easy to empty, reliable.

Henry is the business. Just plain old Henry himself, the cheap red one.

WendyWeber · 07/07/2007 21:14

Which not keen on Henry (although I know builders swear by him):

Numatic Henry HVR200
Henry the cylinder vac might be cute, but his cleaning capability leaves a lot to be desired.

The HVR200 is ok on laminate floors, but that's as good as it gets. It's poor at cleaning floorboards and terrible on carpet. It really struggles with pet hair, too, doing a very poor job of sucking it up. And if allergens are a concern, this isn't the vac to help as it fails to effectively retain them.

It's easy to manoeuvre on floors but cleaning stairs is tricky; ease of use for this is poor. It's easy to empty, though, not too noisy and has a large 5.3 litre capacity.

It weighs in at 8.1kg and has a really long power cable (15.6 metres) so you can cover loads of floor without having to change sockets.

Pros: Easy to empty, large capacity, very long power cable.

Cons: Very poor on carpet, poor on floorboards, average on laminate, very poor at retaining allergens, very poor at picking up pet hair, difficult to use on stairs.

MrsSpoon · 07/07/2007 21:28

"I know builders swear by him", I suppose this sways me as our house has been part building site for a number of years now and I do love the way the rubble just rattles up the hose. I do believe a lot of cleaning firms also use Henry.

fedda · 07/07/2007 21:42

It so happens that all our rooms have wall to wall carpets and we hardly anywhere have the floor so I need a very good hoover. Basic model of Miele might be not that good as it's heavier then I'm able to carry. Any more ideas, please?

The lightest in the Which reports is the Miele S4210 at 6.6kg (£115). How light do you need it to be?

fedda · 07/07/2007 22:10

That sounds good. Do you have that model?
I wonder what's the difference between 4210 and 4211.

WendyWeber · 07/07/2007 22:19

The one I have has been replaced - I think by the S5210 but only because it's black (I mean I think that's the replacement because my old one is black )

Mieles are fantastic, honestly. Def worth spending more on. This is the S4210:
