Washing Machine about to die - what to go for?

My amazing Zanussi is clearly about to give up, but it owes us nothing as it's 17 years old. I know nothing is ever going to last as long, but what to go for. We absolutely cannot afford a Miele. £400-£500 but definitely not more.
Don't need a massive capacity, spin at least 1400, quick wash of 30 mins is fine. Must be white.

I see the Ecobubble gets a bit of pasting on here.

Bosch. I’ve had a few (had to leave behind in moves), always the best for me in that price range.

I buy my washing machine now expecting it to last around 4 years so I don’t spend a great deal any more. I think my last two have been sub£300, I just look at the features I need and pick one that’s got All of them. Not that fussed about brand anymore. I think I’ve got a Hotpoint at the mo, and I must have made the decision in a rush as it doesn’t have a 1/2hr wash!

Schneeball · 28/02/2019 21:38

Yes, the Bosch ones look quite good. I'm hoping for more than 4 years!

I’ve had my current one about 6 years and expect to for several more years, it’s LG - I deviated from Bosch as it had some fancy steam thing but I wouldn’t do so again as I can’t see any difference.

You can get insurance, mine is about £7 a month, I’ve probably paid the same in premiums as it cost by now...

I have the Samsung eco bubble have been impressed so far but only had it for a year

Tbh you’ll be lucky - I’d read somewhere (think it was white goods.co.uk) that machines are only rated now for not much beyond that.

Agree with PP - Bosch is going to be your absolute best in your price range. I’ve had 2 eco bubbles - never again. One lasted 7 month and couldn’t be fixed and one was just under 2 when had a motor failure.

I like my Bosch.

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 02/03/2019 10:41

Bosch, or you could get another Zanussi, probably worth looking on the John Lewis website as you often get a bit more guarantee. If you order in price from low to high it saves having to trawl through the £1500 Mieles Smile. John Lewis own make are meant to be quite good, I was looking at them and they are in your price range

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 02/03/2019 10:44

Don't get a Hoover one like I did, mine is 3 years old and bangs around a lot when spinning, hence me looking at the JL own make ones, in case I need to get one quickly.

ShintyStickHitsShins · 02/03/2019 10:47

My first Bosch lasted about 13 years, and the second is 3 years in and fine. Would definitely recommend it. We've got the ultra quiet one this time, think it's guaranteed for 10 years.

hedgeharris · 02/03/2019 11:29

I had a John lewks brand washer dryer and it was awful - it creased everything to hell. The washing part was good though, agree on that.

DorothyHarris · 03/03/2019 10:27

Avoid hotpoint at all costs, mine has died this morning after months of threats never again their customer service is awful so rude. I've just bought a Samsung add wash for 450 from Currys fingers crossed but I've heard good things and also a 5 year warranty.

ICannotDenyIt · 03/03/2019 11:16

I've got a Samsung ecobubble and love it. So much better for getting stains out than my previous machine. Lots of cycle options and it also came with a 5 year guarantee.

Mine is only 6 months old though but it's great!

mumdebump · 03/03/2019 13:13

AEG - basic model is £400 & IMO is miles better than our previous Bosch which died just after the warranty had run out.

dudsville · 03/03/2019 13:17

I'm so envious you've had your machine for 17 years! I seem to have to buy a new one every three years. Current (new) one is bosch. It replaced a hotpoint that lasted about 2 years.

woodhill · 03/03/2019 13:33

Siemens are good, made by Bosch I think

Mine is 7 years' old

Schneeball · 03/03/2019 18:03

Thank you for all your thoughts. Machine has now officially died and I couldn't find a Bosch one in budget that could be delivered here asap that had a quick spin only cycle. I do lots of handwashing so a quick spin is essential for me (not a half hour rinse and spin or whatever). So I have gone for a Zanussi again. I'm amazed at how long cycles are 'nowadays' - albeit with the chance to shorten them (still not v short though). I guess I will get used to using the 30 degree quick wash for quite a lot.

I’ve thought that too on cycle time - I can only think the better the energy rating and environmental impact, the longer the cycle! Well if you had 17 years from the old one I’d have done that too!
