Rug Doctor

Has anyone ever hired one of these and are they any good? I found a few old threads and one recommended using persil instead of the Rug Doctor detergent, can anyone confirm if this works or have any other tips on a cheaper detergent?

I am moving out of my rented property soon and want to clean a couple of the carpets before I go. I am only doing the living room and one bedroom. A recommended carpet cleaning company will cost me about £65. Although that's a great price, I grudge it as the carpets weren't cleaned for me moving in here and despite me complaining repeatedly about how filthy my daughter's black "cream" bedroom carpet was nothing got done. The carpet now has other stains on it which have actually been caused by my daughter so I want to clean it to avoid any dispute and get my deposit back. Living room carpet needs done as I have a toddler! I shouldn't actually bother as the house was a disgusting state when I moved in and the letting agency didn't give a shit but I do think it's common decency for me to at least get these 2 cleaned since I have added to the mess and I really want my deposit!

Any other cheap/easy carpet cleaning tips welcome!!

I've found the vanish bag quite good. The one where you open the bottom of the bag and it's like a sieve and you shake the powder onto the rug etc

We rent a rug doctor for the club to do the carpets every few months and it works wonders highly recommend

FlyingMonkeys · 21/02/2019 23:07

I hired on several years ago and used 1001 as much cheaper shampoo and worked fine. Many seem to recommend stardrops for carpets, I'd do a test patch first whatever you go with.

We used the Rug Doctor machine a few times in our old house (cream carpets) and it did a good job. We did use the RD stuff in it, and the stain spray on the high traffic areas.

Digressing slightly ,,you may have seen the tv ad for the vax carpet shampooer where a slim attractive lady is shampooing her lounge carpet in a very leisurely laid back manner and then the voiceover proclaims that carpet can be dry in a minimum of 1 hour. Believe me the reality is very different. Im a fit strong man and it was hard work and it took a day for the carpet to be dry to the touch. After using it i then had to spend a min of 30 minutes cleaning the machine, defluffing and de hairing it and thats in my home which i would consider pretty spotless anyway

We use rug doctor and it’s v effective. It’s hot sweaty work, plus the satisfaction mixed with shame of the shit coming off the floor.

sleepyhead · 21/02/2019 23:41

Yes, really excellent (but hard work).

I used Morrisons own cheap equivalent of Persil liquid after reading the same threads as you and it worked just as well as the Rug Doctor shampoo.

Thank you everyone!

I will definitely hire one then rather than paying someone to come in, plus my new house is near by so could give them a clean as well (although since you all say it's hard work I doubt I will bother Grin). The carpets at the new house are new anyway I'm sure.

Arnold I have no upper body strength and am not fit at all Blush. I may ask my step dad to help out!

My mum and step dad hired one ages ago and have some of the cleaning fluid left over so I will have that and will buy some of the cheaper stuff recommened here.

Panicking slightly about getting my deposit back, the house was absolutely filthy when I moved in but the letting agency done nothing about it. I totally grudge even doing any of this but I don't want to risk losing my deposit.

I also have a kitchen blind to replace, I broke that trying to take it down to wash (they wouldn't replace it for me despite it being caked in years worth of food, grime and grease from the previous tenant).

I just want to make sure the house is spotless when I move out so they have nothing to hold against me, although I do have emails and some photos from the day I moved in which lists all the stuff I was unhappy with. Does anyone know if that could be used as evidence if they try to hold my deposit from me?

Sorry I know I'm going completely off topic here in the housekeeping sectionBlush.

Probably too late but we hired a cleaner from hss for a week for the price of a weekend rug doctor from the supermarket and used the carpet cleaner from screwfix.

PivotPivotPivottt · 22/02/2019 22:12

No not too late I've got until beginning of April so open to all suggestions. Just had a look online there's a HSS in a town about 20 minutes away from me. I only need it for 2 carpets so wouldn't need it that length of time but thanks for the tip! What's the carpet cleaner from Screwfix like, is it cheaper than RD?

I think a gallon of the Screwfix stuff costs less than the smallest rug doctor bottle but please check - we did our house 3 times in a week (post builders) so we needed a lot. If you are only doing two rooms you won't need much and PP suggested washing liquid is ok
