E-cloths - has anyone gone all in on these?

I've got a few of the microfibre e-cloths and I'm really happy with how they clean, and so I'm thinking of just using these to clean with exclusively.

Has anyone done this? Is there anything you still need specialist products for?

Also, do you end up with a massive stash of them? Do you use a new one each time you clean? E.g. a new e-cloth for the kitchen daily, a new one for the bathroom daily?

And how on earth do you keep track of what each of the different cloths does? I've seen there are special ones for showers, mirrors, stainless steel etc, but as they don't say on them what they're for how do you remember what's what if you have loads of them? Do you just remember what the different colours mean?

I've got heaps, as well as the e-cloth mops. I bought them before I knew about the microfibre issue. I've consigned them to a drawer and I just use cotton rags now.

I love them! Use them once and put them in the washing machine. I keep the one for glass separate but that is that

Yes I’m aware of the microfibre issue when washing them? I’ve got one of these bags to wash them in to stop the microfibres getting into the water supply.

Yes we do - but it was our cleaners suggestion.
We have built up a stash and I wash them weekly after she has been - I have no idea what each one is for but she seems to remember!

I know which are the general ones and use them in between her visits - but we are pretty lax at doing much in between her visits as we are bone idle and have low standards so don't need anything daily!

We still use a loo cleaner, a daily shower spray, limescale remover and a specialist product for pet urine/vomit as we have cats. I do also have a generic antibac spray which I use now and again on things but the bottle lasts for ages now as only used infrequently. But we don't buy bleach, polish, other sprays etc.

I was going too but then I read they shed microfibres when they are washed. We are moving to cotton clothes but not sure if this is the answer.

ThisCoolBean · 21/02/2019 13:14

You can get bags to wash them in that stop the shedding in the washing machine.
I really can’t see any downsides and surely you use lots less chemicals?

I've used microfibre cloths for years and don't use anything else. These are my favourites. They are smaller and thinner than other ones but I far prefer them - they feel easier to handle, easier to rinse out and are very effective with just water to clean.

I don't think that you can defend them ecologically - they're a disaster in manufacturing and in usage even before you wash them. Cotton or bamboo cloths are fine with hot soapy water for most day to day cleaning, so I don't think they necessarily mean using fewer chemical products.

That said, I know people who have abandoned them but then buy polyester clothing, throws etc.

Sunnysidegold · 06/03/2022 11:54

I bought a lot before learning about the shedding. I hadn't heard of those bags so will definitely invest in one, thanks op.

I have some that are off brand but fairly decent - I use blue for the bathroom and anything else for the kitchen. I tend to use a clean one each day in the kitchen.

My issue is I still use products with them. I can't seem to get my head around the fact they clean with just water.

The double sided blue bathroom one is really good for getting rid of soap scum and then shining with the other side

NightmareSlashDelightful · 06/03/2022 11:58

I use microfibre cloths (not branded e-cloth though)

I just buy blue ones solely for cleaning the bathroom blue for the loo, etc and the other colours just do everything else. I have extra large, extra fluffy ones (the ones marketed for car detailing) to dust with.

I'm aware of the microfibres thing but to be honest if I stopped doing everything that had any kind of impact I'd just end up standing still for the rest of my life so compromises had to be made.

I use products with mine, I like the scents.

I tend to use microfibre cloths, I know they are not great ecologically but use so much less product that I hope it balances out

Blue for loo /bathroom like everyone else, glass ones you can see the difference, other ones I use as I go through the week & do a wash of cleaning cloths/mop heads/bath mats once a week

I do sometimes use other (cotton style) cloths too

CarsonsHat · 08/03/2022 22:27

I have one with a sort of rougher surface that I use to clean the glass and mirrors in the bathroom - then a much finer one which I use dry after I've cleaned with the first cloth and it buffs the glass so I get no streaks.

Notcontent · 11/03/2022 12:32

I don’t think they are a substitute for products though, particularly if you live in a hard water area and need to deal with limescale.

I have a couple but will not be buying more - one of them is dark coloured and I can actually see the bits of plastic it sheds every time I use it.
